Prof Kim is Horrible!! I went into the class very optimistic but ending up hating it/ him. Prof Kim is the probably the most unorganized prof I've ever had! After teaching the same class for 6 years you would think he could organize his lecture notes the way he plans to lecture but he doesn't. You end up flipping pages throughout the lecture. it's stupid. He never returns anything back in a timely manner; it's actually very ridiculous how long it takes to receive anything back in that class. Prof Kim is also very rude and unreliable. After sending him three emails for an OH appointment with no response, I has to call him up. I was ten mins early for the appointment, he made me wait b/c he was busy, although it was clear he was in his office alone... when the schedule time came, he made me wait another 15 mins! Can you believe that! It gets worse. The entire time I was in his office, he had his back to me while conversing with me. It was so rude and umprofessional. I expected better because I actually see him in the TA OH every Monday so he knew me. Prof Kim also has this schedule for turning in lab reports. Talk about stupid... if you're in the later labs you will be turning in your lab reports in Sat and Sun. Overall, I know you're all screwed cause Prof Kim is the only one that teaches Chem 153l. When you take this class be prepared to not have a life whatsoever because Prof Kim has set it up in such a way that you really can't. I guess some prof just don't think students have a life outside of school.

As a lecturer, Professor Kim is okay--he entertains us with jokes and use analogies to help us understand the material better and although some of his lectures are crystal clear, others are somewhat disorganized and hard to follow. His tests (there are six!) are not hard if you look at past tests and study the questions in the back of the lab manual and understand the material thoroughly. His graders seem pretty lenient on grading, which is nice. He also offers up to 10 points of extra credit on the last test. The grades are curved which is good since most of the class consists of 4th years who don't really study since they're ready to graduate so it's not hard to beat. I spent one night studying for the exams but I still managed to get an A. The class itself is pretty time-consuming as others have noted, especially towards 7th or 8th week when our LDH report was due. The graphs and the data tables take a long time to make and are really annoying. Otherwise, the work is considerably less than say Chem 20L, 30AL or 30BL. However, Professor Kim is really nice. He always answers your questions, no matter how many and with a smile. Overall, I would definitely recommend him. It's not hard to get an A in this class.

Earlier reviews of Dr.Kim must have been from whiny people always looking for the easy A. Although 153L will keep you very busy, you really learn a lot. The midterm exams are different in that they test PREPARATION for labs, not analysis or the results. I'd recommend staying on top of your work and going to tutorials for help with concepts and lab write-ups. Also, the problems in the back of the reader don't help you that much. I would study off of old exams to get an idea of the types of questions you'll get on the exams. Dr. Kim was very approachable and overall a great professor. Having a good TA though will save you in this class! oh, and that lady Marriom is kinda scary.

I agree with what everyone's been saying so far: the organization of the class sucks! We don't have enough time to prepare and study for the labs at the same time. What makes the exams worse is that we're not really tested on what we should know about the labs we'll be doing. Rather, we're tested about some other conceptual stuff that is only slightly or not at all related to our labs. The only upside about the class is that we don't have finals, so the frenzy is over by week 9. Just put a lot of time into your lab reports --- make them perfect, because they matter more than the exams. Trust me, the reports will dictate your grade.
