You don't even have to attend lecture. He rambles on about nothing really. Seriously, he gives you a list of terms on the study guide. Just google them and study them. Guaranteed A on both midterm and final. TAs are pretty chill in this department, so you'll receive a good grade on your research paper.
I took the class because I read that it would be an easy GE and that Loza was very chill and laid back, which he was ... but he was so chill that you didn't even know what to study. He just talks and rambles, but you don't even know what you are learning or supposed to study. Then when you get his study guide (which is seriously a word document with about 150 words listed out) you don't even know where half of the words came from, and were not even mentioned in class or the course reader. If you are looking for an easy A, I am not sure if this is the class.
fun and easy GE. His lectures are long, but you get a 5 minute break inbetween. For the midterm, it's all about memorization and setting aside time to listen to the music. The research paper also wasn't hard to do. I ended up with an A+ in the class. I recommend.
So glad to be out of this class... This was a terrible experience. I took it because I heard it was an easy A. Defiantly not worth taking it. I went to every lecture and discussion and got a B. It was just pure memorization of names, and im sorry but 5 carlos's, 7 alfonso's, and 4 juan's is not easy to keep track of. This is the most useless stupid class I could imagine and I highly reccomend against it even if its just for the A, just take something you will actually enjoy and do well in that...
MOST BORING LECTURER I HAVE YET HAD AT UCLA!!! (I didn't not fall asleep in a single one of his classes)
I thought that Professor Loza was one of the most laid back and sincere professors at UCLA. I really enjoyed the material that we learned. I felt that everything that we learned was fair game. If you study, you will do well. Go to class. He doesn't post up lecture slides. Do all the reading. Listen to the discs frequently. Also pray.
Loza's lectures are EXTREMELY boring. It is also hard to determine the main point he is trying to convey to the class. They are useless, much like the reader. Don't buy it, you won't need it to get an A. Although his class is boring as can be, there is an upside - it's SUPER EASY. His tests (one midterm and final) consist of matching questions. Just fill out the study guide after you Wikipedia the people and terms. There's no excuse to not get A's on the exams. There's also an 8-page paper that's also easy. Take it for a 5 unit GPA booster.
This class is an easy! As long as you attend class, it's definitely an easy A. Spending 2 hours to study for mid term? Are you kidding me? A gleams would be too much! The person below must be a stupid idiot or something! hahaha The admission office obviously failed its task to accept you into the school! So, please do not represent so cal (apparently you are more stupid than you sound) and mislead people who attempt to take this course!
Yeah I'm gonna second what the last person said--hes super chill. You gotta remember that there is no such thing as an easy A at UCLA. There are classes that are easy--but no hey I'm gonna sit here and play games while he tells me to do something classes. You gotta do some work (2 hours of studying the day before the midterm or final). I don't know what it is, but at the time I took it, a lot of people got owned on the midterm. Being a Southie, I'm just gonna say those people were Norths that were lazy. But then again I know a lot of hard working Norths so lets just say those people were lazy and didn't realize that when you put 0 work in you get owned. Class is interesting and the work is manageable. Essay is really not that bad if you can write (not great mind you, just pretty good).
I don't care what anyone says, Loza is a really chill and great teacher. If anyone was paying attention, they could see that his whole view on education is about the learning experience and not just solely based on grades--hence, the easy A. I looked forward to going to this class because it was a fun and easy class compared to all my ridiculously hard ones. Yeah, I suppose you can do without the readings, but I think i needed them to find the meanings of a lot of terms and whatnot. The guest speakers were really cool too. Seriously though, just take the notes on the projector---the TA's pretty much write what he says, so the hard work becomes insanely easy. Make sure you study the study guides and DO THE LISTENING--that's key for both midterm and final. The 8-page paper is also fair. Make sure you know the song and artist too because he'll be playing the song clips during the tests and you're responsible for knowing them. Honestly, this class is easy because it's not meant to confuse you or be difficult, it's just supposed to be fun and interesting. You surprisingly learn about the history that went into Latin music, and I can definitely link a lot of his lectures to my other classes as well. TAKE HIM!
