If one looks at grade distributions from last few years, one can easily observe that the reviewer below me is a noticeable anomaly. There are basically two possibilities: either there was a problem with the reviewer or there was a problem with the professor. Based on my experience with this class and Professor Steinberg, I would argue that there is a significantly higher chance that the former is true. Through his lectures, discussions and weekly assignments, I truly feel that my English writing and citations skills have largely improved. I agree that workload was very, very heavy; however, it's certainly doable if you put enough time. Also, describing his rubric as "his own crazy semiotic system" is quite unfair, as he clearly explains his marking system in a sheet of paper that you get in the first lecture. Yes, his handwriting is quite illegible, but again he explains everything if you ask him in person about his comments. Most importantly, I believe that it is incredibly rude to write an additional comment in a language that not all users of Bruinwalk can understand, especially if that comment is the gist of your review.
For everyone's sake, the last three sentences briefly translate into: Do not take this old man's class, he is a hypocritical "white left*," a total racist, and an example of someone who is tolerant to himself but strict to others. His grades are only based on your initial/original performance , and he will not teach any new materials. He is also suspicious of discriminating Asian males. (Chinese is not my native tongue so the translation is by no means perfect. I learned the language in my high school, and I also used a dictionary and a bit of Google Translate)
I am also an international student and also an Asian male, and I totally disagree with what the reviewer below has said about Professor Steinberg and his class. He is not racist at all and he does not discriminate against anyone. You'll get good grades in this class if you put enough effort.
Finally, I have to say that this is just my perspective, so take my review (or any review) with a grain of salt.

Professor Steinberg was great! The class was not too intense but was still highly thought-provoking. He would constantly engage his students in a non-pressuring environment that would challenge them. There is homework due for pretty much every class, which can be a lot at times, but it is simple and straightforward (read articles and answer questions). There are also essays, which he allows you to correct your mistakes for a better grade. At the end, there is a final group project, but this project is quite confusing, as there are little to no guidelines. Overall, a very solid class and teacher, which I would recommend for any student.

Also, I am selling Rereading America for $35 and A Writer's Reference for $20. Great condition on both and they are both necessary. Text me at ********** or email at *************

Really heavy workload, more than 2000 words and around 150 pages of reading a week. Focus on contemporary issues of America. Structured criteria on MLA. Not much about writing techniques. The sign-up system of office hour is really efficient.

The thing I loved about this class is that Professor Steinberg would always bring in articles and tie current events to what we are learning in class. This class explores critical social issues and debunks the "myths" of America. I found the topics very interesting and overall the class is incredibly engaging.

I took English Comp 3 my first quarter at UCLA and Professor Steinberg is the best English teacher I've ever had. He iis a great professor and genuinely cares for his students. His English Comp 3 class was the first English class I found enjoyable. The essay prompts and in-class discussions are acutally interesting and deal with real-world issues. At the beginning of each class, he presents the class with book recommendations and interesting handouts. Dr. Steinberg is the best writing professor at UCLA.

I highly recommend taking English 3 with Sternberg! He covers fascinating topics such as race, gender, and economic inequality. The only downsides to his class are the fact that he takes attendance and is very anal about MLA. He literally refused to grade my first paper because I didn't follow strict MLA formatting.

I agree with every single word of the reviewer below me. It’s true that the workload was very heavy, but it was still pretty doable because Prof. Steinberg only required us to write down our feeling, thoughts, or whatever that could be relatable to the materials we read. Basically, if you do read the articles, it is not hard to do the work at all.

Prof. Steinberg is an extremely nice professor. He truly cared about students’ improvement and he DID LEAVE A LOT OF HELPFUL REMARKS on our papers. Thanks to his high standard in our citations, for the first time I learned how to cite in a correct way (which helped me a lot while I’m doing my papers for other classes).

And to the student who blames his poor grades on the professor: I feel sorry that in your perspective, you had a really bad experience in the class. But if what you said is true, why didn’t you write in English to let everyone see it? I’m a Chinese student too and I’ll support you by all means if you’ve really been treated unequally by the professor. But based on my experience, I’ve never seen Prof. Steinberg showing any inappropriate or racist-related behavior in the class. If you are just venting your anger and dissatisfaction of your grade, I feel sorry and disappointed for your irrational, irresponsible, and misleading accusation to the professor.

I wrote a lot but ended up deleting everything since I feel like words are not enough to describe how incredible he is. Despite the heavy workload, you really learn something from the course. It broandens my horizons and invites me to a world that I didn't have much knowledge about. He cares about students, often discussing news and social issues with us during class. He loves when people talk, but if you are not comfortable speaking in the public, he never forces you to do so. He is pretty tolerant towards grading as long as you go to his office hour and show that you've been paying attention. He is generous, and he is really understanding and caring. Best professor I have ever met at UCLA.

The worst instructor I've ever encountered in this school. He is a disaster. As an international student, I expect to learn about English writing and rhetoric skills on his class. However, Steven Steinberg did NOT teach at all in his lecture. Instead, he just let everyone discuss and slipped away from the classroom for a cup of tea. He pretended to be nice and easy-going but ended up giving you failing grades. He assigned tremendous amount of homework (over 100 pages of readings plus written response plus essay each week), which is even more than the workload of an average writing II class. He left very few remarks and instructions on your homework using his own crazy semiotic system and his handwriting is so ugly that no one could discern. 不要上这个老头的课,他是一个伪善的白左、十足的种族主义者、宽以待己严以待人的典范。他只会基于你原有的水平打分,不会教会你任何新的东西。他有歧视亚裔男性的嫌疑。
