It's hard to describe the exact reason why you shouldn't take this class. There isn't one specific thing that makes it so bad - it's the culmination of a lot of little things that made it the worst Econ class I've taken at UCLA.
The first thing out of Professor Ozler's mouth was "I am combative." Not a good sign, right? She then proceeded to present disorganized lectures in mildly broken English and expected us to understand every single piece of information she gave.
The exams were my least favorite part of the class. The final was cumulative, so we were expected to know an ungodly amount of information about a WIDE variety of topics. She actually told us that we needed to know everything we had learned in class. Literally everything (?). But once I actually saw the final, it became clear that she was only testing us on MAYBE 10% of the material covered in class, and she wanted SPECIFIC answers. These were subsets to side sections to additions to lectures-type answers - quite vague and seemingly useless compared to the main points outlined in the course.
This was truly the biggest waste of my time. If you want to learn about Globalization, take a Global Studies class. If gender, take a gender studies class. Unless someone else teaches this, don't waste your time in a class where the material is made so incredibly over complex that it drives you crazy.
Rant over, but seriously, would not recommend.

I don't get why there are so many negative reviews on bruinwalk. Professor Ozler cares about students' learning and always encourages questions. She never had a problem with repeating something or explaining it in a different way. She always asked us what she can do to make the class better and really cares what students think of the class. There is a lot of material but if you just take the time to really review the slides and take good notes in lecture you will be fine on quizzes/midterms and I also don't think she asked overly hard questions on the quizzes/midterms like a lot of the reviews suggest like if you read the slides and pay attention in lecture you're going to know the answers. I'd take the class again

Learned absolutely nothing. Worst class I have ever taken at UCLA. Does not come to class prepared and makes the students do the lectures. What is she being paid for?

An embarrassment to Ph.D holders around the world.

I am really sad to see such mean reviews of Professor Ozler, she is a very kind and helpful professor. She responds quickly and is always open to talk during office hours (which literally nobody attended...she even sent emails to remind us that she is available during the weeks approaching midterms and finals) and she was even willing to reschedule times around. In terms of class, I found the topic refreshing and really interesting. I don't think she is a horrible lecturer...I was kind of scared to take the class because of the other reviews but I genuinely think she's a really cool professor. I do have to say tho, if you're not interested in the application of economics outside of money, banking, finance etc. this is not the class for you.

Ozler has been very understanding of the current circumstances. WIth the pandemic and the recent riots, things have been very chaotic and I think Ozler managed to be a great and understanding professor during these times. She also referenced a lot of the material to present day which made the coursework a lot more interesting. I have taken her class before and I really like her teaching style. One thing I would say is a weakness are the exams. The questions on the exams are worded in an incomprehensible manner so sometimes I feel like I have to kind of read her mind rather than just study the material on its own.

I took this class spring 2020 and it was entirely online. Considering it was online, it was a piece of cake. However, if this class was in person I don't think I would have done so well. This is not a math intensive econ course, there is actually 0 math. The midterm questions were extremely specific and you would get docked for the tiniest mistakes. Her curve is generous however (91-97 A, 84-90 A-). You could tell she really cared about her students well being amongst the Covid-19 and BLM protests therefore she made the final optional. She only held office hours on the CCLE discussion forum which is like not helpful at all. Personally, if this class was offered online again I would take it, if not don't think so.

Avoid taking this class at all costs. The professor is horrible, the material is extremely boring and you’re very unlikely to learn anything in the first 5 weeks. Even for feminists in the class the material is bad, statsistics are 20 years outdated if at all present. Furthermore no methods or sources are given for statistics that are presented. This class is a true waste of time.

I cannot stress how stressful this class was. Like 15 people would show up to lecture. I always went. It was rough. She seems nice, but is not a good professor.

I managed to pull an A- because she drops the two lowest quizzes, I got lucky on the midterm, and by the time the final came around I figured out her testing style. My quiz grades were 60-70%, one below 50%, and one 100%. She does not have a curve, but the grading scale is adjusted.

I would not take this class again. I spent a ton of money on the textbook and course reader. I touched both once. Don't buy them. All of her exam questions are based off what she talks about in lecture. I advise downloading her lecture slides (which are very very very unorganized) and taking your own notes on them. Copy what she says word-for-word. She tests on memorization. Some of her questions on quizzes/exams came off the study questions, which were the most helpful part of class. Sometimes she gave answers, but sometimes she did not. If no answers were provided, go back to the lecture slides and you can find the answer.

I made a practice final based off of questions I anticipated that she'd ask, and she ended up pulling all of the questions from the final from questions I'd practiced.
But heed my warning--I WOULD NOT take this class again.

Very little econ involved. I look at it as a gender studies/women's studies class. It's supposed to be a lax course but beware of the graders who are not always generous with points on exams. Many students were unhappy with their midterm grades because everyone expected an easy A but instead got B+/B's. I understand why students might think she's unprepared/"lazy" (she has trouble with the projector/laptop/media and thus wastes class time & oftentimes shows videos instead of lecturing), but I really think she has good intentions and cares about her students. She always asked for our opinions as to whether the videos/readings helped and sometimes cancelled some readings. 1 midterm & 1 final + participation grade.

Positives: Content was pretty easy, though the lectures weren't organized well in my opinion. Study guides were elite in the sense that being able to do every problem on it (tests are 99% memorization) guarantees at least a B+. Homework was not difficult, and I felt like the coursework itself was very manageable.

Negatives: Very, very combative. Some poor guy in the front of the class kept asking questions and being engaged in the content, but would then get insulted by the professor for being a tryhard or annoying. Sometimes brutal personal insults as well. She kept complaining about nobody wanting to talk but she brought upon this intense atmosphere.

Just a very odd class in general. I've had far more tough classes with kind professors rather than easy classes with mean professors.
