Quarter: Winter 2023
Grade: B
March 23, 2023

While I think bruinwalk reviews are sometimes pretty biased based on your personal experience with a class I am going to do my best to explain why you should not take this class.

Professor Ozler is unclear, disorganized, not engaging, and lacks an ability to articulate important trends/patterns/arguments that students should take away from her course. Her lectures should've made up for the unclear slides, but instead contributed to the confusing pace and arguments presented under each course topic. Students frequently asked her to repeat herself or elaborate on specific topics, but she often deferred to the slides or reiterated arbitrary facts without explaining their broader significance.

If not for her confusing and disengaging lecture style, Professor Ozler's personality is quite combative- as one student mentioned below. She was unhelpful in answering questions, and assumed that what was written on slides or already stated by her was satisfactory in explaining course topics. She complained early on in the course about the lack of class participation in her lectures, but if she structured her arguments in a more succinct and compelling manner maybe students would be more inclined to share their thoughts. Likewise, her dismissive character when students did ask questions did not nurture an environment centered around intellectual curiosity and growth.

Overall, Professor Ozler does not demonstrate the helpful, caring, and engaging qualities required of a strong and effective educator. Please do not take this class.

Quarter: Spring 2022

Professor Ozler prepares detailed very helpful outlines/ study guides and she makes questions feel welcome with extremely generous office hours. She is open to questions during class and she even directly asks the students about what they think of the lecture and its quality. She cares about the class and the students. Econ 113 has a lot of material to go through and memorize, but she gives you a lot of time to study it and she is always there to clarify or repeat anything you are not sure about. On the exams, there are very few calculations, which is good news if you are not someone who likes math. Her exams are very fair if you did the reading and went through the slides. Her curve is generous. Overall, Ozler is open to questions and feedback, provides you with lifesaving study questions and answers, gives you a generous curve, and genuinely cares about the quality of the class. Loved this class.

Just going to repost what I put for 107 which I also took with her the same quarter: "God-awful class. The professor put no effort into explaining the slides and just read off them, as if they were not wordy and confusing enough as is. I couldn't even understand what she was saying half the time. She clearly did not care about her students and didn't have an office hours, so case in point."

This class is purely memorization, and since I took this the coronavirus quarter with midterms and finals open book, it was extremely easy.
Professor Ozler is not a great lecturer, every single thing she says could be on the test, even the little asides and tangents she goes on. This course really challenged and improved my typing speed, I would not recommend taking notes by hand for this class.

BUT it is very clear that Professor Ozler really cares about her students, she went to great lengths to reassure students and make accommodations in this uncertain and chaotic time. Before the quarter even began she was sending us emails on how she's working hard on adapting the course to be online and sending us articles on how to stay calm and take care of our mental health.

Hands down tu Professor Ozler! I honestly don’t understand why she has so many bad reviews. She’s the most caring and understanding Professor I’ve ever had during my time at UCLA. Despite the chaotic and uncertain conditions these days, Professor Ozler still manage to finish her lectures, and I really appreciate that. I definitely will take another class from her and highly recommended it!

This was my second course I had with professor Ozler (the first being econ 107).
I took econ 113 amidst the coronavirus outbreak so the class was online. Despite the many obstacles associated with online learning, professor Ozler did a good job of maintaining her standard of in-person teaching. Professor Ozler cares greatly about her students and their success, offering many outside resources and accommodations for individual students and the class as a whole. Additionally she made the final optional and provided a great sense of relief during such a difficult time. I would recommend taking any class with Ozler

Selling course reader and textbook for less than face value! Text ********** if interested.

Ozler is a really straightforward teacher, and her exams don't contain any trick questions. Studying for the biweekly quizzes is perfect prep for the midterm and final, and you get to drop 2/4 quizzes. Some people scored poorly on the midterm, so she gave a bonus question for 10 additional points that could be added to the exam. As long as you're willing to do some memorization, this class will be an easy A.

She is a very nice lady. I learned a lot about gender economic. As a women, I understand how women is discrimated and we have to work harder and be strong in order to have a better say in a such paternalistic society. Also, it solved a lot of questions about classic economic. It is not definitely that people will make rational (max utility) choices. Therefore, it explained the reason for some model that is abnormal.
This class would be easy A, if you follow the slide in class and review them before exams.
Good class to take!

Professor Ozler is very knowledgeable about Gender Economics, but was not particularly approachable. Office hours were only available upon request, which was not very useful to students. I will say that her exams (all short answer) were very fair if you came to class and studied, and she did make review questions and sessions available to students. However, this is NOT a class to take for an easy A, but it will fulfill your economics electives without a heavy mathematical emphasis. There is a lot of information to retain, along with a large amount of reading, but it is doable. Interesting material, but I would not take the class again.
