Not a "class" by any stretch of the imagination. No lectures, no way to contact Was/course readers, no way to interact with other students, office hours conducted via email...
This isn't a course-- this is a list of busy work for you to complete. Her syllabus is ridiculous and convoluted. The workload is absurd. Dropped after week 1. Not worth it at all. The grades clearly work out (after you slave for a quarter), but calling this an "education" or a "class" is absolutely criminal and a disgrace to Ucla political science.
By the 3rd week, I was an expert on making charts/tables in excel. Not difficult at all. Every week, there are papers to write ranging from 1 to 3 pages. Most of it is your interpretation of the data you will write about. Not even graded on accuracy because as long as you are gathering facts from the data you can interpret it any way you choose. It is not at all as hard as it may appear. Get in a group of three and you'll end up writing 1 page at the most. Fun class and you will learn a lot. Don't let the prompt overwhelm you. Also, Lohmann gives several (5) opportunities to write another paper if you want a lower grade replacement. There are also extra credit tasks (6-8) of them if you want to improve your grade. The games you play also improve your grade. Then there are the graders… if you happen to get a harsh grader, it's okay because she accounts for this at the end of the term as well. If you do end up in a group, you may have different graders and this is a good thing. Overall, The class seems very very very overwhelming the first week but don't drop it until you make it to the second week. It gets better. Based on email communication from her, she always kept the class informed on the next steps and reminders. Take this class with Prof. Lohmann.
This was by far the most pointless class I’ve taken at UCLA. Pretty much one of the worst online classes I’ve ever taken (out of about 20). I did not learn a single thing – I may actually be dumber for taking it! BUT – I got an A+, without much effort, and without going to any lectures. SO if you want an easy A with just a little bit of effort go for it – if you actually want to learn something – stay away.
This is for the online class.
First of all, it seems that now the class has become less work compared to previous quarters. You have from Thursday to Tuesday to complete a report and she grants extensions for basically anything. One of my friends asked for an extension for Mother's Day and she gave him a 4 day extension.
The reports are hella tedious and do require a lot of information in 2 pages, but she herself says you can skip questions if need be and it's honestly just boring not really hard work. It'll be like 2.5 hours of mind-numbingly boring work, but you don't go to class or have lecture, so it's no big deal, I just did them on Sundays or Monday before it was due. You play some "games", which are really just surveys, so that's easy buckets, and you get points for your answers, and people in the middle third of points get 1/3 letter grade increase and people in top third get 2/3 grade increase.
Admittedly, the professor and her graders honestly don't seem to know much about statistics and often their grading was arbitrary and they're not very helpful and often make stupid decisions. BUT, c'mon look at that distribution up there, it's not a joke, almost EVERYONE got an A+ or an A. If you got a B+ or lower, you probably messed up somewhere.
Take this class, it's boring as hell, but it's an easy A+.
POLISCI MAJORS. STAY AWAY. STAY FAR AWAY.
people who do well in this class don't have anything better to do with their lives. this class is TONS of data and numbers and chart making and pointless writing and SUBJECTIVE grading.
holy moses stay away. unless you are a math major with nothing better to do stay away.
This class is so much work. Do not take it, unless you love lots of work during your last quarter. Whichever idiot below said it's worth the work is a loser or they have no life. The class doesn't make sense and is just tons of non-political science time wasting
tl;dr - great class, lots of work but WORTH IT and don't stress about the grading
Wow, this class was very interesting. Unlike the others i've taken as a Political Science major at UCLA.
The online style is actually great here and connects up well with the course content. I learned lots in this class, way more than other classes, and its mostly interesting stuff that i'll find useful later on. Content-wise, the class is great. The professor is great too... Very helpful, caring and engaged.
the class is LOTS of work though. But it pays off. Pretty much everyone got some sort of A. Unlike lots of classes here, the hard work DOES payoff in this class. And I learned a lot because of the work I did, so it's a win-win.
I was woried about my grade at first because i got really low grades on the reports like Cs and Ds. I think one of the readers was a bit weird or something because the comments were offtopic and childishly written. Were I asked the prof for a regrade and my C was lowered to a D, which never happened to me before. But then my grades improved, and miraculously I got an A+ in the class. Could have done without the stress but whatever alls well that ends well right?
Too many people complained about the work. But come on guys, you don't have to go to lecture so how can you complain about an extra hour or two of work a week? Totally reasonable in my opinion.
I took this online class after reading other comments and just assumed there was some exaggeration on how the length and biased nature of the work. There was not.
To break it down:
Beginning of each week is EASY- between Monday and Thursday you play some online game theory games- they take about anywhere from 5-20 minutes in total. All points you get feed into your grade. Great.
End of each week AWFUL-
between Thursday and Sunday you have to write a 3 page paper. This sounds easy. It is not. You must understand excel and even then its very time consuming- you analyze data, and attempt to fit about 9 pages of questions into 3.... aka 10pt font and .2 margins. It takes a good 5-15 hours. Not joking. And each paper basically has arbitrary grading. Week 1 paper I got a C+, Week 2 A+, go figure. I've lost points for 'grammar', 'fluffy wording,' for 'graph shading' and basically my 3 pages not looking pretty enough.
Further, in general if you've taken courses on game theory like I have, it feels like a waste of time for the most part. There is no lectures or 'teaching' per say, just play the games and then read articles to be able to say what the class data should have looked like and why.
However, she does seem very fair and it appears that people do well in the class as long as you are willing to sacrifice your weekends to write the papers (as a graduating senior I am not pleased with this outcome)
I personally would rather go to lectures twice a week for a few hours and take some tests instead of taking so many hours to analyze data that really doesn't add to my education.
Class Taken: PS115D online
I do not really agree with the person who wrote about this class below me. This class was offered online for the first time, and so obviously there were some glitches here and there.
We have to play some online games every week (usually just surveys and they take less than 30 mins), and we have to write a weekly report each week. The report is time consuming (about 5 hours), but she gives you a prompt stating exactly what you need to answer. And it is due Saturday at midnight, but we get the assignment Wednesday afternoon so you have plenty of time. And it can be 3 pages single or double spaced - your choice.
She also drops the lowest of your reports, and by playing the games you can get an automatic grade increase. And the excel part is not at all complicated, its very basic.
Overall: pretty easy A!
Please NOTE: this is for her online class.
This is my first ever evaluation. I was going to wait until the end of the quarter to write it, but I wish I had known the following before taking her class.
1. You're going to be stuck writing weekly reports where the prompt takes anywhere from 6-15 pages with a 3 page limit. (AND they're only worth 9 points total)
2. You're going to be stuck playing weekly games from which to analyze the prompt.
3. You MUST know Excel to do well in this class
Although she is an easy grader (she's giving an automatic grade raise to the top 1/4 percent), I would NOT recommend taking her online class. Her prompts are completely biased, the T.A. gives different grading for the same work, and reports are due SAT night = bad social life. Additionally the T.A. only spends about 2 minutes per report.
