Susanne Lohmann is arguably one of the best professors I've had at UCLA. This class is not only interesting but extremely relevant to the current socio-political climate. If you follow her instructions, you can easily get an A in the class. The TA's (course readers) both gave great feedback and there's an equalization factor added or subtracted from your final grade to ensure both sections were graded fairly. There is no lecture for this class, and the deadlines give you plenty of time to get your work done on the online gaming platform and subsequent reports. Professor Lohmann was completely empathetic to the current situation in Spring quarter as well. I would highly recommend this class.
Students, beware. I read about the heavy workload from other reviews prior to taking the class but it still stunned me especially in the first few weeks. If you're willing to devote most of your free time on this class, because trust me it'll demand most of your attention, then you can consider taking it. Not recommended for people who are slightly on the lazy side or just want to breeze through.
The content of the class itself was interesting, but the heavy workload often made it feel like the simulations were dull in comparison.
to be honest the assignments are ridiculously confusing and time consuming, but if you do everyhting, play all the games, and do the extra credit that are super easy, you will get an a+. it is 100% worth it as a GE or as prereq.
Class is interesting and Lohmann is really nice and helpful outside of the classroom. Looked on Bruinwalk and though this class was going to be a lot easier than it was but since it is all online, it was hard to get in the swing of things. But Lohmann knows this and gives extra credit and helps increase your grade at the end with your "survey" scores. Overall, would recommend but keep up with your work and do all of the extra credit!
This class is very straightforward and not very hard. With that being said, it is definitely time consuming.
This class is one report a week for the entire quarter (10 total) with the opportunity of skipping 2. You have to play weekly games that are then used to determine your "extra credit." Meaning if you do well on the games, you get a lot of extra credit.
The reports are 2 pages long and very doable if you take the time to do them. You have to analyze games and use the games to make an argument according to what the prompt says. The way she grades the reports is pretty stupid and can vary wildly week to week. But there is tons of extra credit, so getting an A is very doable.
The only annoying things about this class are the professor's love for overcomplicating things and making things so much harder than they have to be. She is super extra and thinks that giving out a 22 page prompt for a paper that is only 2 pages is long is "thorough." It is stupid and unnecessary, but its not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. She is very detailed and I am pretty sure she has OCD because she is vey particular, but its not a huge deal.
As long as you play the games, do decently on the reports, do the bonus point activities, and set aside a couple of hours each week to do the reports, you should be getting an A minimum.
This class has an INSANE workload. I know the grade distribution is very appealing, but please understand that you will have more work from this online class than any other class you're taking. Interesting topics, but to be quite honest, it was way too much work. There are a lot of pros to this class; however, beware of the workload!
The workload is pretty insane, especially during the first few weeks when you don't know what is going on. The grading is very biased and incredibly skewed. Grading is all over the place. She makes up for this by giving tons of extra credit and designing the class in such a way that everyone who puts in effort gets an A.
Hands down one of the best Political Science classes I have taken. Everything is online, and you do not have to show up to the lectures, although they could be useful. Her honors class was amazing as well and she is not a strict grader. Every week there is an assignment that has a strict format and is strictly shown how to complete based off of surveys and games done the prier week. Overall a great class.
This class was great. The class is all online and I never went to lecture and got an A. The class consists of surveys played that rank up points depending on your answers. After taking the surveys, you get a weekly assignment that corresponds with the data from the surveys. Two of the weekly assignments are optional group work. She drops two of the lowest scores and gives extra credit for doing some of the assignments. She also bumps your grade for having high scores in the Gaming Platform. Overall the class is interesting and exciting and I would love to take it again.
I took this class as an online course in order to fulfill one of my GE's (sorry Pol Sci majors). The class itself is fairly simple. You have to write 10 reports (2-3 pages each) throughout the quarter (1 report/week), but the really convenient thing is that you can skip up to 2 reports without it affecting your grade at all! In addition to that blessing, you can ask for a extension for the reports for no reason whatsoever; just say you need an extension! Basically, the class consists of taking games/surveys from Monday-Wednesday and writing the report from Wednesday noon-Monday noon. You should do the games because they really don't take a whole bunch of time and they can give you a major grade boost (I was boosted from an A- to an A+). Reports are graded pretty harshly at first, but the grading curve is very generous. Whenever I had a question, I always emailed Professor Lohmann and she replied within 12 hours. It was certainly an online class that had an appropriate interaction with a professor. Do not be afraid to take this class, I highly recommend it!
