This professor was the most unclear and unfair professor. I don't understand why he was even able to be teaching and don't believe he should continue. When I first started the class, I thought he was a really cool math professors with lots of icebreakers and fun games to help understand concepts. However, as the class went on it seemed to me that he really was playing mind games on the whole class. He would make typos on lectures and then frame it as if he did it on purpose, giving people bonus points left and right for what felt like complete favoritism. For our second midterm, he gave some of the class the ENTIRE midterm with word for word questions that COMPLETELY ruined the curve. The first midterm was fair and those who worked hard actually did better but since you were able to take the midterm with the higher score almost everyone got 100% on that midterm. Not to mention, he would tell us to ignore certain material that he said wouldn't be tested which then showed up on exams! For the final, there were many rumors that he gave people in office hours the questions that would be on the final. This class was extremely corrupt, as I had an A in the class up until the terrible and impossible final that was given. I am extremely upset with the way this class had ended and definitely wouldn't recommend taking his class. I have even reported this to the math department and I am very disappointed that no action was taken further.
Pros:
-Good lectures for the most part.
-The material is pretty cool to learn.
-About 15-25 hw questions a week isn’t too bad.
-Exam reviews are helpful and is similar to what is on the exams (not the homework).
Cons:
-Exams are very tough and not like the homework (this is my opinion. ~10 people would still get an A so it obviously is doable, just know the concepts as well as the homework. I mainly studied the homework and that’s not enough)
-Lots of mind games...
-The instructor would say material would “for sure be tested” and it wasn’t. Or something would be “for sure not tested” and then be tested. Study everything and ignore his hints on what is and isn’t tested.
would not recommend this class in the slightest. I studied daily for the entire quarter and had an A up until the final. for the second midterm, the lecture before he decided to tell the class 3/4 problems that would show up on the test word for word. this allowed those who had not kept up with the material to get an A on the midterm , which led a majority of the class scoring an A or a B. this destroyed the curve so swee hong gave an incredibly difficult final to bring the grades down, which screwed over the people who had been studying and actually deserved a high grade. in addition, he would often say a certain topic would "100% show up on the exam" and it would not, and vice versa. so basically do not listen to any of his hints and just study everything. overall, the class was not conducted in an organized or fair manner and i don't think swee hong is qualified to be a professor.
First things first. This is my favorite professor in the math department.
Supper clear and straightforward.
Tell good jokes in class.
Exams are fairly similar to HW problems. Make sure you understand ALL the details.
Through out the whole quarter, there was only one "tricky" question appeared, and it was the very last one on of our final.
Be aware the topics he mentioned in class that will be tested, those problems are assigned (much) higher possibilities to come up in the exams. However, the possibilities are NOT 100%, so make sure you understand every one of them.
Practice a lot and you'll be fine.
He is a really nice professor. Very reachable. Explains everything very clear. Homework is optional and the quizzes/ midterm/ final are basically the harder version of homework. Very straightforward. I would definitely take this class again with this professor.
Swee Hong is such an amazing lecturer. I enjoy learning in his class as he gives our printout notes for us to take notes on. He sometimes makes jokes but barely noone acknowledges it. HOWEVER, he really cares for us and talks about Yugioh, Pokemon, etc. He always sings us Stayin Alive by the Beegees at the end of each lecture to make sure we are healthy and well. If there is a room, I would take his Math 170S class because he is such an amazing professor
I took this course with Swee Hong virtually, and he made a really good effort to be accommodating to different time zones and online learning in general. The course is definitely back loaded, the first weeks were very simple but you will not have a good time in the weeks following the midterm if you are at all confused with the early material. He was responsive to student feedback and would always reply very promptly via email. He would frequently make jokes even in the online setting when no one would laugh lmao and contrary to older reviews I thought he was very fair in giving us a heads up on the material that would be on quizzes and exams.
