Just to start off, I have never written a single review prior to this class, but I feel like it's necessary for other UCLA students to know how terrible this professor was.

In my quarter, the class was composed of a single midterm, final, and project, so there wasn't a lot of flexibility with grades, which is fine but it means that our grade were composed of the exams that were unrealistic, seen by the test averages of the class that were never above passing. Just to give some context, I took 1A with Gardner and 1B with Woo and received As, but I decided to take this class P/NP.

Berges is a great person; this review has nothing to do with her character but just her poor teaching. Her lectures are all powerpoints with no application of the material, which I feel like is one of the most important parts of learning accounting, and as a student, I didn't feel supported by the professor at all.

I highly recommend taking 120A with either Lu, Woo, or literally anyone else. Avoid Berges at all cost, unless you really need to take the class and are taking a very light class load. The class is not impossible for sure if you self teach yourself and spend a good amount of time every week studying (6-8 hours of studying per week of the quarter minimum), but if you're handling any job or harder class load the class would be a huge time waster.

i wouldn’t take this class unless if you really need to. the exams are harder than it should be and she doesn’t give us any type of useful study guide/practice exams. just felt like we had to memorize EVERYTHING. however, she does curve the final grade by almost a letter grade and a half which also depends on how well your class did overall. i felt like all i did was spend 80% of my time studying for this class while i had other classes that i needed to study for.

there are better accounting professors than this one. she is nice as a person but sucks as a professor. all she does is read off of slides and sometimes doesn’t even know what the slides even say. it just really shows how she isn’t prepared for the class. it is a bit unrealistic in terms of wanting us to memorize everything but doesn’t know what she’s teaching on that day.

Her exams are extremely hard for pretty much no reason. The midterm 1 average was 57% and the 59% for the final. The content is not hard at all, but she just makes the exams tricky with exercises that are not on her slides or on the homwork she gives. I would not recommend her at all.

This class was extremely difficult for no reason. Pairing a ton of material to cover, with a professor that only reads off of slides will be your worst nightmare. The class is composed of a midterm, final and project. While professor provided a list of topics that would be on the exam, it was completely up to the student to find problems that would help them understand that topic. And if you think you know it, you probably don’t. The final project required 20-25hrs of work that didn’t help at all on the tests. The midterm and final were very difficult, mostly because there were no practice problems given to guide us to succeed on the test. While the curve was generous, the amount of stress that I encountered made this class very uncomfortable.

Horrible professor. Course itself is extremely difficult as there is a lot to know, but there are far better and more reasonable professors teaching this course. Where do I even start, although her slides were decent and had all the detailed info we needed, her lectures were extremely bland and she tries to force the engagement by name picking random students on the spot who learned the material for the first time, which in my opinion wasted teaching time which was why the class was behind schedule and she sped run through a lot of topics towards the end. Grades were made up of midterm, group project, and final. All exams were closed notes and to say the exams were difficult is an understatement. The midterm was beyond anything I've ever seen and a class mean also reflected that with a 48/100 which is unheard of for a management class. She gave us no prior guidance or practice for the exam, the textbook practice questions were no help. She gave us the project two weeks later than what was stated on syllabus and that coincided with Thanksgiving break and finals studying after and she still expected us to spend 20-25 hours on it as a group collaborating (no separating the work). Things on the project were not even tested in the final so it wasn't even useful in using it to study. She recommended we go into office hours if we needed help, but it was not useful as she couldn't even tell us anything about our project. The final was slightly better than the midterm but still extremely hard and required memorization of the materials learned in class (7 chapters). Although she did give a list of topics to study for, I wish she would've given us some practice problems or even a past midterm like most other professors to prepare us better for final. Also, be warned that during the three hour final, and yes you will need those three hours, she does not let anyone exit the hall and use the restroom so if you have a small bladder, do not take this class. Overall, Berges was one of the worst and unprofessional professors I've ever had.

If you want to learn, but pray that you do well, take her class. If you want an A take Litt. If you want a mixture of both take anyone else.

Good professor. Her tests are fair, there are no surprises (I enjoyed her tests after taking Ravetch). For midterm, I did all the homework problems she assigned and read over her course reader (important) and got 98.5 (including extra credit).

Group project was a pain in the ass though, my only advice is to start early so you are not so stressed in the end. But she's actually very lenient on the grading.

Final: studied 2 days before, got an A.

I think it's pretty easy to get an A in this class as long as you're not stupid (for reference, I got a C in Ravetch).

Berges herself is a decent lecturer in the accounting department. I haven't fallen asleep in her class once, but that's mostly due to the insane pacing of the course. It's usually one chapter per 2 hour nonstop lecture.

Recommendation is to study continuously and not cram a few days before the exam (speaking from experience). The exams are not overly complicated; the difficulty lies in the amount of material you're expected to retain and know every step of. It's largely a memorization course and her lectures are almost exactly scripted from the textbook.

You HAVE to buy the course reader. It's a life saver when you study. Scored an 89 on the midterm, took the final today and I think I did relatively well, so I do recommend Berges, but only if you can pace yourself or are willing to go crazy cramming before exams.
