Quarter: Fall 2018
Grade: A-
July 13, 2018

I have to say Prof. Berges is the worst teacher I have met in UCLA.
1) I LEARN NOTHING FROM HER CLASS. All contents are those I have already learned in other accounting classes and Prof. Berges did bad in teaching them - yes she just read the slides. Even the slides are not well prepared, designed terribly and full of grammatical mistakes.
2) I don't know why we have to buy the course reader - there are only slides on it and most of them are blurred due to bad printing quality.
3) The attitude of Prof. Berges is ... I don't know how to explain it but I feel she did not respect every student. Sometimes, I can feel she discriminate against students, but it is sometimes not always, probably depending on her mood...

I admitted there are good things about this course - the guests she invited are very knowledgeable from different fields like IB, VC. That's the only thing I would appreciate.

Quarter: Fall 2017
Grade: A
Dec. 14, 2017

Id like to preface this review by stating that the critical review below is not out of anger of a bad grade (received highest score on midterm in class), but rather out of care for students learning

As a student who has seen most of this information taught from various accounting professors (Gardner, Ravetch,Klein,Williams, and maybe even Litt,), in my opinion, Berges did a terribly poor job of 1. teaching this material 2. Making class enjoyable to attend.

To begin with, Berges did not teach much material. Rather, she read off her slides. We are all students at UCLA and can read slides. Her course reader were the same thing as the slide she posted. So, rather than wasting money on buying a course reader, Berges should POST THE SLIDES WHICH SHE ALREADY HAS to her CCLE. Not to mention, her course reader had many basic grammatical and formulaic errors. It is clear that she does not update it year to year.

I can distinctly remember Ravetch's Break Even analysis lesson which he teaches in 1B. He uses his experience of trying to open a CPA review course at UCLA and explained how he used cost benefit analysis. On the other hand, none of the material Berges taught stuck with me. Berges was not an engaging teacher beaus she simply read off of her slides, and made very practical material to eager business students very impractical.

Her tests did not test our knowledge, but rather forced us to memorize terms, of which most of us will forget a day after the midterm and final. Additionally her midterm required students to make an Income Statement and Balance sheet ( she briefly mentioned in class). Despite getting everything to balance on my exam, i thought this was extremely unfair to students who had never created an income statement or balance sheet before. Again this isn't mgmt 1a with Gardner as that is a big focus on her midterm.

Grading: 25% of the class grade is attributed to participation+projects. However, we did not receive a single grade or feedback on our projects throughout the quarter.

For sake of time and studying for finals I will conclude with the following: Berges should not be teaching this class because she simply does not teach anything to the class. A part from the mandatory attendance requirement, students gain nothing by attending class. It is a shame such interesting material is taught so poorly to students at a top university. As a student has taken almost every accounting class at UCLA, in a respectful way, I believe I could have more effectually, and more engagingly taught this material to these students.

**** If YOU have knowledge of accounting, this class will be a BREEZE. I really SUGGEST people take Accounting 1A before taking this class. I did not have any prior accounting experience and neither did my friend and it was considerably harder for us.

We had a presentation on the 2nd day of class. There was a presentation almost every class. All the presentations are group presentations. The midterm had a ton of accounting stuff, while the final did not.

There was a few guest speakers, which were very intriguing. Also, you cannot be tardy nor miss class. If you're tardy she might call you out and that's one of her pet peeves.

Professor Berges was a great teacher in terms of how informative she is and how much information she has to give you during office hours. She brought in some great guest speakers and really took the time each time I met with her to go over the practicality of the class and applying it to my business. There were some things on tests that seemed like they could have been afforded a bit of leeway (i.e. exact wording for fill in the blank answers) but overall, it was a good course and I enjoyed it!
