I loved this class. Each week and lecture you explore a different language family and related languages, their histories, where the languages are spoken today, where many heritage speakers reside, and characteristics of these languages. Definitely would recommend if you are interested in linguistics, especially about languages that are spoken in the LA county. The only assignments were an individual project on a language during discussion, two open note exams, and a final essay, which was take home and you are given about three weeks to work on. An easy and extremely interested GE. Professor Sullivan is super witty and an amazing professor who supports students and is super knowledgable in linguistics. 10/10 recommend.

Super easy course. She knew that everyone was just in it for the GE credit and just asked that we put what extra effort we could. Only 1 hour discussions on Mondays were required and that was waived because of the encampment/protests later on so she is very understanding and accommodating. She even got rid of the 1 paper we were supposed to do. Exams were easy and open note/open lecture notes.
Very smart and interesting; I advise you take for an easy but interesting Diversity requirement.
