This class was one of the easiest classes I've taken at UCLA. Due to health problems, professor Browner wasn't able to make it to like 4 lectures, so those were cancelled. There was a midterm and final and 4 listening papers. The listening papers were very easy as long as you actually listened to the songs and described them. The midterm and final were both essays (the final was take home, though) and the TA graded very generously. I only studied for this class the day before the midterm and final and was fine. The lectures, could be a little dry though.. and she showed up late to every lecture (about 10 mins+). She makes some weird jokes... but would take again
Awesome professor! I recommend her. She is very knowledgable about a subject that can be easily misinterpreted by outsiders. She had 5 listening assignments, 1 in-class midterm, and 1 take-home final. The workload is doable and it was always a change of pace in comparison to other UCLA classes. Her TA was just as nice as she was and did all the grading, however Tara is always in charge. You are able to use a laptop for note taking. Tara is big on respect, give her your undivided attention in class and you will get an A.
I took her for a Native American Music course.
This class shouldnt even be allowed at UCLA... It is so unbelievably easy, I felt like I was in middle school... If you have any chance to take this class.... TAKE IT
You will learn random ass stuff, but she manages to make the lectures semi-entertaining and it is definietly an easy A.
If you want an A on the tests, follow the directions to a T - meaning if she says cite an example from lecture, the book, and the listening... then do all three.
We had 1 inclass essay for the midterm, 4 listening "papers" in which you just bullet pointed what you heard in the song (super basic) and the final, it was easssyyy!!
This class was very interesting and Professor Browner does a good job giving examples of the different types of music in class. I have the course reader for this class and can sell it for $50! Contact me at *************
