The grading scale for this class is now contract-based, so that assignments themselves are all pass-fail. You have to complete "meaningful and substantial revisions" on both papers based on comments, so the aim is to improve students' writing. Professor Paul is a very kind teacher, and the subject matter for the class is quite interesting. I recommend this course if you are interested in applying the academic study of history to a general audience. The workload is very manageable.

I took this class with Professor Paul and had an amazing experience. However we did not have a T.A. and our assignments were graded by the professor. I am sorry to read that Chloe was tough on grading, I visited her at the writing center and she was an excellent resource. Professor Paul is an extremely helpful and caring person and I advise anyone who wants to succeed to visit office hours. The final was a group project and the topics we learned were extremely interesting. She expects a high quality of writing so if you are like me visit the History Department's Writing Center for some help. She even offered some extra credit at the end for some extra work we did as a group for the project. I am not the smartest person in the room but I am a hard worker and I believe this class to be fair in regards to expectations and grading. Compared to the horror stories I have heard about Langdon this class is something anyone should look forward to.

Professor Paul is truly amazing. This was my first time in a public history course and she did an amazing job integrating every student into the class. She has a very upbeat and kind personality, and she puts in the effort in working with and knowing each student. The seminar was all discussion based, moderated by Paul, and they were informative, welcoming, and engaging. There are multiple readings and books per week with a reflection based on completion. She doesn’t make you read the full books but teaches you selective reading. We did not get to do all the tours of LA because of the pandemic, but we got to do one for two once campus opened! It was amazing! Professor Paul also offered to extend my final research presentation, giving me a unique opportunity to continue research in history after the class ended. I recommend her and her classes (:

Professor Paul is literally the best Professor I’ve ever had at UCLA. She sincerely cares about her students’ education and is passionate about what she does. I’ve taken her for this class, along with others and she’s amazing. As for this class, the grade was made up by 5 weekly reflections on readings that are interesting (not difficult), participation in the class (also based on the weekly readings) and a choice between a final paper or project. During class time, there are expected field trips, however this quarter, the pandemic delayed these trips. You’ll love Professor Paul. I recommend everyone to take a class with her. I promise you won’t regret taking her.

Professor Tawny Paul was one of the kindest professors I have ever had. Her class was a very interesting approach to public history and the readings taught me a lot of things I had never considered before. There were class field trips and group projects that made the class much more engaging as well. If you complete the work with effort, you will receive a good grade in the class. I truly enjoyed this class and definitely would take her classes again!

Professor Paul is an amazing gem within the history department and I would recommend anyone who hates research like I did to take her. Not only does she help you along your journey towards completing your project but she offers plenty of time outside of class to help if you reach out. One of my favorite memories in this class was taking a walking tour to Los Angeles where we explored the city. She is really passionate about her field and the seminars are never boring. If you want to get the most out of those read the assignments or else the conversations will suck. This is my third time taking her and I really cannot stress how important office hours are when trying to succeed in class. The books required can be found online or even at the public library. She even digitally uploaded a chapter we needed because she understood that with other classes books can get expensive. She was also really understanding about Covid-19 and moved our seminar completely online after a majority vote among my peers.

Professor Paul is a great teacher who is very enaging and loves to include her students in the topic of conversation She explained how her grading works very clearly and is always open to answering students questions to do assignments right. Her grading is easy (contract based) - just turn in all your work fully completed (she provides word counts on everything) and you'll get an A! There are no tests, just 2 medium-sized papers, a few revisions, 1 group project, and a few reflection papers. Attendance is mandatory because there is a doc to fill out every class however she provides 3 freebies. This class is so doable and I never felt overwhelmed. Professor Paul is super nice and funny which makes it comfortable to ask questions. She also connects what we learn to things happening now which keeps it relevant. The topic itself is very interesting and I enjoyed attending lectures. I would 100% take her again

THIS IS A FANTASTIC CLASS!!! Please don't listen to the older reviews!! Professor Paul is one of my favorite professors ever she actually listens to her students, she's incredibly understanding, and her class is very interesting and engaging. She listened to previous feedback and there's no TA now, Professor Paul teaches the entire class herself. Her class does require participation, don't expect to just sit there and fall asleep during her lectures. It's very easy and engaging and I feel like I left the class with a much deeper appreciation of history.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE OTHER REVIEWS!!!! This class was amazing! The class is structures around two essays (around 3-5 pages each), essay revisions, reflections and a final project. The class was also structured as a contract course, so your grade depended on how much effort you put in the class. I had the class on Tuesday/Thursday and Tuesdays were lecture, while on Thursdays were workshops led by our TA Chloe. If you put in basic effort you should be good and get an A. Professor Paul was very clear, engaging and encouraged discussion which I loved. And she always made sure to make contemporary connections to the historical subjects that we were talking about. ALSO Chloe was a great TA! I don't understand why the other reviews spoke so badly about her. All her workshops were super helpful (I will definitely be using some of the knowledge and skills I learned in the workshops, for other history classes) and she was always available for office hours. She also provided extensive feedback on our essays, and she was available for office hours to further explain her feedback. If you are interested in museums, archives, or any sort of public history I recommend taking this class! It'll be worth it! (plus you might see Henry, Professor Paul's Dog)
