Take this class it will seriously be the easiest GE while still being the sickest GE you will ever take. Harrison is amazing, really funny, and just an all around cultured man. I got by without really reading any of the assigned books. Skimmed some and definitely did not read a page of the Decameron. only have to write 3 short papers and take a 5 min quiz at the beg of each disc so workload is super chill. freaking take this class!! the movies were sick the lectures were interesting and not only are you engaging with art but also the current and past political climate. i literally haven't taken a better class since!!!

This was my favorite class from fall quarter. It was so different from any class I'd ever taken. The emphasis was not just on film, but culture and political issues as well. I loved coming to this class and would gladly recommend it.

Loved taking this class! The subject matter is fascinating and the professor and TA's are super chill while still maintaining an environment that pushes you to learn more. The BEST class I have taken at UCLA!!!

Class consisted of watching 9 movies and 3 papers (each with a max of 700 words). As far as paper grading goes, it all depends on your TA. I received 2 Bs and an A. The midterm and the final were all multiple choice. They were fairly easy and the final was not cumulative. In the end, I got an A in the class. The movies could get weird but I don't regret taking this class. Selling all the course material including:

If you're south campus major, don't take this class. I took the very first class and dropped it as the film was really, really boring. You could hardly understand what it want to show. Not to mention write 3 papers for such kind of movies and you have to spend 3 hours watch them every week.

Like everyone else has said, the lectures and the movies watched in this class can get a little boring. Discussions are fantastic though, my TA (William) was really good with relating the themes of the movie with every day life. The essays for this class aren't graded too strictly and you kind of get the hang of knowing how you are expected to write as the class goes on. Midterm and final were surprisingly tough because most questions asked you to analyze the films in ways that hadn't already been discussed in lecture/discussion. The class was okay, I don't have much interest in film or italian but I did learn a lot.

Really interesting class. Some of the films were a bit boring, but the discussion sections made up for those. Discussions expanded on the film analysis of Prof Harrison and brought the points made in the films to a more personal level. They were probably some of the best discussions I've had.

Exams were fair, and Prof Harrison was generous with adding extra points so that most people easily passed.

Professor Harrison is the best professor you'll ever have at UCLA. I went into this class thinking it would be a really easy A and that the papers and movies would be easy and interesting. Little did I know that this would become my favorite class to date. Harrison is really insightful and his lectures are interesting and funny and hold your attention. Even when I didn't like some of the movies, I still looked forward to his lecture about it to see if there is some redeeming quality, and he always makes you see the film in a different light. I've come to really appreciate cinema as both an art and a science. As for the grading, there are 3 500-700 word papers that you have to write and they're pretty easy. I got mid80's to low 90's on them. The midterm and final are both multiple choice and the final is non cumulative. This being said, the questions do really make you think but the test is very fair. There is also a very generous curve. If you do all the readings, attend section, and just do the assignments, you'll most likely end up with an A. This class is podcasted for the lectures, but I highly recommend going to class as you get so much more out of it.

Italian 46 was one of my favorite classes. I'm a south campus major and found that the reading/work for this class was definitely doable. It is kind of time consuming to have to rewatch the movie when you write on it, but he did put a majority of them on video furnace so you could watch them anytime on your laptop. The movies were all interesting and relevant to the readings. The film analysis wasn't too hard and the TA's tended to grade nicely if you actually had an argument in your paper instead of just summary. Definitely recommend!
