Loved this class. The lectures were incredibly engaging and the material was fascinating. I really felt like I took something valuable away from this course. The final paper was challenging, don't procrastinate on it. But otherwise the powerpoint homeworks were easy to do and didn't take much time. Tests were very doable if you spent the time to understand the material. Wish I could take all of Cvrkel's classes.

Quarter: Fall 2016
Grade: A-
Dec. 13, 2016

I took this class as a GE cause it sounded interesting. Little did I know I was signing up for a philosophy class that dives into the theories of cultural relativism, utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, and then a more interesting second half of the course applying these ideas to issues like abortion, animal rights, and genetic engineering. The professor is really cool and up-to-date on millennial/pop-culture and has a lot of insight and knowledge on the issues. This was a cool class but if you're looking for an easy GE where you're not gonna have to put in a significant amount of effort then this class isn't for you. The workload isn't super heavy, its just that the tests are graded very harshly and you have to learn how to write a certain way for this class--its not like typical english class writing--philosphy is surprisingly very mathematical and logical. You make a quick 3-slide ppt for each lecture focusing on one argument she made in class, and other than that its just 2 midterms and a final exam as well as a final paper on your biggest personal moral dilemma (you write a paper on how you would solve it using ethics you've learned in the class). Overall this class was interesting and kind of daunting, its a great class with a helpful, engaging and interesting professor, but I'm so glad its over. Would not want to repeat that class especially when its just a GE. Its a challenging GE!

This class was so cool! Cvrkel is a great prof for this class. She cares about her students and we talk about a lot of super interesting and relevant topics during lectures. Attendance to lecture and discussion is mandatory and part of your grade. The tests are graded pretty harshly in my opinion so its not a super easy class if you are looking for a GE but it is super interesting so that helps.

I learned several key concepts in this class, such as forming arguments and thinking critically. MCDB 60 was one of the very few classes I enjoyed at UCLA, and I would recommend it to everyone. The professor and TA (Jessica) are extremely intelligent and helpful. Very engaging class!

This class was very interesting and engaging! Professor Cvrkel is awesome and knows how to make the class challenging, yet intriguing. Jessica as a TA is great and she really helps break down a lot of the material that Professor Cvrkel goes over in class. Jessica, along with professor Cvrkel, make sure that every question is answered and that you understand the bigger picture. The midterms are pretty straightforward; you just have to make sure you take awesome notes and form a small study group. Although the discussions are mandatory, they are worth your time and are even more helpful for review. The only homework, besides some readings, that are required of the class are 3-5 PowerPoint slides which can easily take at the most 15 to 20 min if you study and practice enough throughout the quarter. Overall this class is no easy A, and expect to actually work and put in more effort than you normally would for a GE class.

I learned extremely important skills in this class: how to formulate arguments, how to think rationally and logically, etc. These skills have helped me in all my classes and other pursuits since. The professor is engaging, funny and extremely intelligent. I thoroughly enjoyed the class for how different it is from other classes and how it opens your eyes to basic principles that we take for granted.

I took MCDB 60 with Cvrkel and got an A.

This class was amazing. It was one of my only classes I liked, and I took it my first quarter at UCLA. It was incredibly interesting and well taught. My TA, Jessica Kriksciun, was the best TA ever. She always had office hours, was always available, graded in a timely manner, and cared deeply for the education of the students.

Overall, the class was not EASY at all, the concepts were tough to grasp for most, but the workload was easy. I would recommend this class to anyone who actually cares about the subject, because it will motivate you to work for that A.

Take this class.

Great class! I would definitely recommend everyone to have it. It is challenging, but it's so worth it.

Prof. Cvrkel is funny and knowledgeable and Jessica the TA is literally the BEST TA ever- she compliments the study of the class so well.

If you are willing to commit and want to walk away with some solid knowledge, take the class.

I make it A- in the end and I am not regretting taking the class.
