Professor Kushigemachi is the coolest professor ever. I literally could not sing his praises enough. East Asian Horror was already such an amazing topic of study and Professor Kushigemachi was the perfect lecturer to do it justice. The lectures were engaging and the quizzes were great because he wasn't trying to trick you; sometimes the questions would be as simple as like "What does Godzilla mean." Professor Kush is totally on your side in this class- he canceled work for week 5 and made the screening optional because he knew we were in midterm season and then, at the end of the quarter, he canceled our last discussion post assignment because he understood how hard things had been and he recognized how burnt out people were in other classes. Considering the class was just the weekly quizzes, an essay, participation in section, and 3 discussion posts, he really didn't need to cancel anything. The workload was beyond managable- he's just that good. Seriously, if you can ever take this course or literally any course with Prof. Kushigemachi, DO IT!

Professor Kushigemachi is probably the BEST professor I have had at UCLA. He is so kind and understanding and anyone could tell that he really cares about his students. He is engaging, knowledgeable, and provides insightful views. The workload is more than manageable and overall it was just a wonderful class to take. My TA, Alexx, was also an amazing TA! I wish I could take this class again.

Excellent class, easy and fun so that you learn a lot without feeling any stress or pressure. I enjoyed the lecture videos as a break from other classes, so this class felt more like a hobby than a class. My only issue with this class is that the professor chose to follow a specific narrative of film history, so the class didn't have time to watch a lot of very important historical movies. Totally understandable, but a little frustrating to have a whole bunch of incredibly influential movies referenced throughout the lectures without having them assigned for viewing/discussion. Other than that, though, a really interesting and fun class if you enjoy movies. Participation was required in discussion, but other than that you can put in about as much work as you'd like.

If you are a film major, or any major for that matter, you are doing yourself a severe injustice if you do not take this class! Professor K is one of the most charming, engaging, and accommodating professors I've had at UCLA. He has a great sense of humor and is very approachable (as approachable as one can get by interacting online). For this particular class, Film Genres, we studied 3 different spheres of East Asian Horror Cinema: Japanese, Hong Kong, and Korean cinema. Throughout the quarter we watched a great variety of films that were all interesting and engaging in their own right (don't worry if you get too freaked out by horror movies; there's something for everyone here!) The assignments are all extremely reasonable and relatively easy, too. There's just one essay for the class, and you have a lot of freedom in what you want to write about. Highly recommend!

Todd is a clear lecturer and it's clear that he's very passionate about film and tries to pass that on to his students. Grading scheme is lenient, the class material is interesting - overall 10/10 course and professor - would definitely take again!

Professor Kushigemachi was the most accommodating professor at UCLA; he is very passionate about his students learning and always puts our mental health first. All the movies were really interesting and we covered Japan, South Korea, and China films. The professor included section participation, multiple choice quizzes, 3 short response assignments, and a short analysis paper. No prior knowledge of editing techniques was needed to complete the assignments. I recommend Alexx as a TA!
