Out of all the classes I have taken at UCLA, this was the best class I have taken so far. Professor Kane is such a great professor. She loves what she's doing, she's fair, and she's very real. I always looked forward to her lectures. They were easy to follow with well-prepared slides.
Her tests were extremely fair. The tests reflect exactly what was taught in class. If you make some flashcards and attend the review session that she holds before each exam, you will be more than fine. She even posts a study guide for you to use to help you study, and I used that to make my flashcards. There are two midterms and the final. The median score was an 87% on Midterm 1, an 82% on Midterm 2, and an 86% on the final.
She puts a ton of grades in the grade book, so you have a lot of room to make up points if you don't do well on a lab/exam. There are weekly activities online that are very easy and are graded on completion, which is a huge grade booster. There are online quizzes each week that are easy (disclaimer: I did read the textbook, so if you don't, I'm not sure if they'll still be easy). Attendance is mandatory and you get points for attending each lecture and answering the iClicker questions. We also had three opportunities for a total of 12(?) extra credit points throughout the quarter.
Labs are very easy and do not require a ton of work. As with most courses, the labs are not the most interesting and sometimes drag on. The work for lab is minimal, though, and it's graded pretty leniently.
I cannot recommend this course enough! If you have the opportunity to take a class with Dr. Kane, I highly suggest you take it! Coming to her lecture directly after a draining Math 31B lecture would always boost my spirits and remind me why I'm at UCLA.
The life science sequence sucks overall. I took this class during the summer and it was much more fast paced, but Professor Kane was accommodating and recorded all her lectures. Of course, you still had to attend these lectures for iClicker questions. I enjoyed discussion sections where you worked on lab sheets that would ultimately culminate in a group project and presentation at the end of the quarter. Although it was a big chunk of your grade, show up and you will receive the passing points. The exams are tricky so I would refer to old iClicker questions and any old exams that you can get your hands on. First, you take the group midterms together and these were usually high in scores. I had my best experience in the life science course sequence with Professor Kane and would definitely recommend her for summer classes. Devote yourself to the material, skim the readings, and practice a lot. You can pass with an A.
Dr. Kane is the best professor for LS1 as far as I can tell. She integrated dense information with fun facts and stories. I enjoyed going to class every day and the tests were fair and straightforward as long as you review the slides.
Really fun and interesting. Kanes classes are all relatively similar to one another. If youve taken a class with her, its pretty much similarly structured.
Concepts covered are interesting, exams are extremely straightforward so long as you paid attention in lecture and reviewed slides, and overall, not too bad.
Very interesting and chill class. Kane tells you exactly what to expect on midterms and exams. Class is straightforward in expectations.
Super fun! If you liked 109, youll probably enjoy this class too.
Kane was a good professor! As far as LS 7 lecturers go, I thought she taught well and tried to keep the class engaged. She could have maybe spent a little less time between clicker questions, but otherwise, she was solid. In terms of the actual class itself, I found it to be a little harder and more frustrating than LS7A. While the material for a lot of people is a bit easier to understand, I thought the exams themselves were a bit harder (Although that might have been because I had very little interest in the material). Also, there were times where I felt the class was wasting my time. The "labs" for this class are two hours long, but I felt like a lot of the activities we did either could be finished in much less time or could be better formatted to finish earlier. Additionally, there is a project where you basically have to research a plant in the Botanical Gardens, and honestly, that was a fat waste of time, as none of the material required for that project was relevant to the class. Long story short, I thought the class sucked, but Kane was good.
I thought she was very helpful and also very approachable as a professor! She taught concepts really well and I actually enjoyed the pace of her clicker questions because I got to answer the question on my own, ask people around me, then relax a little before getting back into the material.
This was by far my favorite class taken at UCLA thus far. Professor Kane gives extremely engaging lectures, and made EEB 142 amazing. The class itself is very interesting, and Kane was able to get everyone really excited about aquatic communities.
Exams in this class were pretty straightforward. Study her slides and learning objectives really well and you'll have no problem doing well on them. The tests consists of T/F, multiple choice, and short answer style questions. Discussion is very important in this class and makes up 220 of the 600 total points in the class. Discussion assignments including writing summaries and questions on the assigned papers, taking quizzes on CCLE, and writing a critique.
Overall, a wonderful class. You will have lots of fun and will not have a problem getting a good grade.
Professor Kane is a really solid professor, but I think I had extremely high expectations of her given all the amazing things that are said about her, so I didn't really feel the magic. She definitely knows the material and knows how to properly lecture. She got a little scary when she told me to get off my phone during class, but I would take 7B with her again. I never really left the class unclear about a topic, and if I did all the TAs were great at clarification.
