LOVE Howard. He is such an awesome professor. Ed 130 is definitely a class that you will not fall asleep in, Howard is very good at keeping students engaged as well as laughing. This class is time consuming in its assignments but it is very worth it. This class allows you to relate the topics discussed to your own educational experiences. It also provides you opportunity to learn about which communities and groups of people do not receive educational resources and opportunities.
Assignments:
1)Micro Teaching Session:
You will sign up for a particular week in which you will do a presentation. This presentation is on the readings of the week you chose. People have done power point presentations but get creative! For example: games and even incorporating videos and other forms of media
2)Weekly Reading Responses:
These are really annoying because of all of the given guidelines in writing these response papers. Essentially you choose 2 readings to summarize, write your personal opinion, and create counter arguments to
3)Final Paper:
Looks scary because it is 10-12 pages. A little lengthy in my opinion. You can pick any topic, you just have to relate it to the course material. The paper is due 10th week so start planning a topic 7th week so you can attend office hours 8/9th week.
A GREAT class. Majority of the reviews are right, 3-4 written assignments (once every two weeks), plus a mini teaching lesson done in discussion, midterm paper is about yourself, final paper is longer and on a topic of your choosing based on what you learned in class. He is a great professor.
Some of his TA's however are raging b*tches. At least 7 people I know got 50% on their participation grades despite attending lecture and discussion. So if you get Laura be prepared to talk and think critically or just suck up to her and make sure she knows who you are because if she doesn't, you're out of luck.
He is just one of those professors you have to take before the end of your tenure at UCLA. I can not think of a better professor that really tries to holistically develop students. I went to every lecture and discussion (that's how amazing it was)
TAKE THIS CLASSSSS!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET
Definitely THE BEST course offered at UCLA. I would undoubtedly call Dr Howard one of the most influential and practical professors at UCLA. His class challenges us to think outside the box and think of all the wrong doings in the education system today, and not only that, but he makes you want to do something about it! I would HIGHLY recommend this class to any and everyone!!
As far as grading goes, he is extremely fair (hopefully you have him as your TA- the best discussions EVER!!). There are 4 journals, due every other week, a good 3-4 articles to read every week, a midterm: 5 pages, and a final: 10-15 pages. Seems like a lot of work but you will definitely ENJOY it! I got an A+ in the class and I wouldn't say I killed myself over it.
I took education 130 last quarter and I know that this will have one of the best and most influential classes I have ever taken. Dr Howard's class truly opens your eyes to the inequality that exists within America's schools but does it in a way that allows everyone to draw from their experience. It is by no means an anti-white or anti-elite presentation. Dr. Howard is also very eager to hear our thoughts during lecture and allows plenty of time for us to participate. EVERY lecture was interesting and many time entertaining because of the stories he would tell and the exercises we would do. The course work may seem like a lot (weekly summaries, quite a bit of reading, and 2 papers) but they are all well worth your time. The first paper is a personal reflection on your educational experience and the last one is a group research paper (at least 20 pages which you will find is not difficult) on a particular topic. If you are having trouble with anything however, Dr. Howard is more than willing to speak with you and help you suceed.
I would recommend this class to anyone regardless of whether they are minoring or even slightly interested in education. Outside of the class Dr. Howard is a wonderful resource to have if you are interested in pursuing fields in education and is eager to help his students even when the course is over.
Professor Howard is the best Professor at UCLA. His lectures are fantastic, although attendence is only necessary for section. He is always ready to extend a hand and help his students understand the concepts. His TAs are excellent, too. The professor and his TAs are understanding and empathetic; the class is welcoming and positive. The course is wonderful, but a lot of work is involved. Short papers (one to two pages, single-spaced) are due weekly, consisiting of reflection and personal analysis of the weekly readings. The readings are long and many, but are thought-provoking and well worth your time. Two papers are required: one personal mid-term paper, and one final, group paper. The mid-term paper is a self-reflective 8-10 page paper that is quite easy...basically you just talk about yourself and how you've been molded by certain variables within the education system while using the readings to back up your arguments. The final paper is a 20-25 page collaborative paper written by groups of 4 to 5 people; topics are group-chosen. All-in-all, I would definitely take this class if I were you-- whether you are an education major/minor or not!
I took Howard Winter of 06 and he was a great professor, he really opens his class time for discussion. The topics are important, thought-provoking educational issues. It is an area where you can really share your views and opinions. The papers are really easy to do, mainly because they're basically about yourself. Also, the readings that he has the class do are a lot, but they are worth your time, especially Kozol's book: Savage Inequalities. I think all education minors should read that book! Also, the TA's, especially Nikki, really know their stuff, they are concerned and very considerate!!!! Take this class if you are serious about being a teacher!!!!
