Spring 2021 - One of the best classes I've taken! Professor Matsumoto is extremely passionate about the topic of food in relation to one's identity within America. The class material was very interesting, and as long as you participate and show a willingness to learn new things, this class will be life changing. Wish I could take it again for the first time.

Her 191 is truly a great class. It's all about food and how Asian culture has impacted the food we eat in the U.S. The readings are interesting and the class brings real awareness about why we have so many different types of food available to us. The class becomes like a family and she's like the parent. We talk about food and share our stories and she keeps the class going by creating great topics and bringing up good questions. She's very respectful about our personal stories as well which promotes good conversation and honesty in the class. The workload is just right for a 191 and it's fun to do as well. My only problem is that I was always hungry in class cuz all we talk about is food!!

Spring 2021 - Valerie was amazing and very encouraging. We were required to complete the readings in advance and share our thoughts during class. Because of the smaller class size, our conversations were interesting and had good depth. We took turns writing discussion questions for each week. Our grades were based on weekly reading reflections (1-2 pages), a recipe analysis, a menu analysis, and a final research paper (8-10 pages). It was a great class, and I really enjoyed talking about food for several hours.
