I want to preface this review by saying I do not like math in general and some of those preferences transferred over to my feelings about this class.
That being said, I strongly feel like this class was difficult to say the least and was taught in a way that was not friendly to someone trying grasp the concepts at a beginner level. I took calculus in high school and the concepts in this class were made unnecessarily difficult and extremely boring. Concepts that can be learned with a simple analogy often took an entire lecture and simple concepts were often over explained. The midterm was not terrible and the homework was not very time consuming however the final was much more difficult than expected. I ended with a B+ because of a generous curve but that is really about it.
Pros: I confirmed my distaste for math in this class.
Wenhou starts and ends on time.
The homework answers can be found online.
Cons: I was almost always frustrated.
The final sucked.
The professor has a poor grasp of what students do and do not already understand.
Overall, the professor is a nice guy but if you have to take a math class look for an alternative to this one and save yourself the trouble.
I loved this class. I took him for 32A (he's not listen on Bruinwalk for 32A so I'm just posting under 31B) and his lectures just make sense to me. He writes EVERYTHING on the board when he's lecturing, even stuff that may seem obvious to some, which I like because it ensures that everyone is on the same page. His midterms are exactly like his practice midterms and nothing comes as a surprise. I highly recommend taking Wenhao Ou.
This review is for Wenhao Ou's 32A class. Honestly, his accent was hard to get used to but worth taking this class. He is great if you aren't a genius at math. His average for the first midterm was in the 90's and the second midterm was in the 70's or 80's. He has an extremely generous grading scheme and doing "average" in the class will earn you a high B. Not the best lecturer or even the best math professor I've had here but if you're a stressed out premed you'll be thankful this class didn't wreck your GPA. His practice exams were almost IDENTICAL to the actual exams, just different numbers used.
Wenhao is straight up a terrible lecturer and will leave you more confused than just reading the textbook. However, he makes practice tests that are identical (literally) to the two midterms, and the final is a combination of ~70% third practice exam and problems from the midterms.
As long as you know how to solve the problems he gives you and do the weekly homework, you should be fine. Class is definitely not mandatory, Wenhao is probably one of the easiest on your GPA math profs you can take and has very clear expectations. I hope he never changes.
Professor Ou is a good professor to have for 32A! His lectures, albeit a bit boring, stick to the material being tested on/what's on the homework, and his accent does not really inhibit his students from learning. It's not that strong, and he writes everything he's saying on the board anyways. He does do proofs for certain theorems/formulas that aren't necessary for the test, but they're interesting to learn about if you find math interesting. If you don't, just copy them down and never look at them again, because they're not necessary. He doesn't allow cheat sheets on exams, but his midterms are exactly like the practice midterms, so studying those are all you need to do for the two midterms. The final is more difficult than the midterms, but the concepts are all familiar. To study for the final, I suggest going over the past two practice midterms and doing the practice test for the last third of the material from after the second midterm. I never went to office hours, but I heard he's helpful. His homework load is not heavy at all; it's one assignment per week from the textbook, and there's always less than 20 questions on each one. Discussion sections aren't mandatory, and he doesn't seem to care about tardiness to lectures. Overall, a good professor for 32A! I've heard other professors are a lot harder.
Professor Ou is a very fair professor. He writes everything on the board when he lectures so it is always clear what he is saying. The workload is fairly light, and the practice tests are exactly like the actual tests. A bit of an awkward man, but overall a great professor!
One of the worst professors. Never take him. You can barely understand a word that he says and he does not explain well. However, if you lose a bet and have to take him, I would recommend going to class. I probably went to a fourth of classes and one day he did this really weird example that I thought was worthless. Almost the exact problem was on the final and most people missed it.
I would definitely recommend taking this class. I ran into a few problems because some of the material is only covered in lecture and if you miss it, it can be hard to find it in the book. Also, homework problems were never graded nor were solutions posted, so I highly recommend getting a group together to work on homework solutions and practice tests together. My TA was not very helpful because he was not specific to Ou's class and didn't seem to know very much about what we were covering. I think he gave out a lot of A's this quarter, so that was nice.
His accent made learning a little difficult, but the topics covered in class were not too difficult. The tests were almost exact copies of the practice tests he gives out. Lectures are pretty useless, and you could probably not go to class and still get an A. The final is a lot more difficult than the midterms.
