Quarter: Spring 2025
Grade: A

Pros:
Homework: 2 problems per lecture, the lowest two were dropped.
No participation grade
Most people, including myself, got 100% on the exams.
Review sessions the day before exams.
Index cards
She gives (and sticks too) the outline she gives at the beginning of the course, so its easy to get ahead using the textbook.
The content was fun too! Mind you, I am a math major.
She is nice, laughs at jokes, and office hours aren't awkward if you have questions

Mediums:
Tests 5 true/false 4 free response
When you ask her a specific question, she often refers to her own slides, which are often word-for-word from the textbook or Google. If you can really explain your confusion, she can give you some answer, but sometimes it is just "out of the scope of the course," or you just watch her Google the answer, just like you did yesterday. She feels more like a peer than an instructor, which I appreciate when talking with her, but it is worrisome when the person making your exam doesn't have concrete answers to certain questions.

Cons:
None

Overall, she is my favorite professor! If you like the content and are used to self-studying, you can do really well. If you depend on lectures, get hung up on questions, or just don't want to study outside of class and homework, change who you are. Wern is perfect.

Professor Yeong is a great professor, she's a very clear lecturer and was very organized. The homework load wasn't too bad, and the exams were very fair. The class discussions were pretty useful, as they consisted of us doing practice problems with LAs present to give one-on-one help. I think this class could be difficult depending on who you take it with, but I found it pretty easy to succeed with Professor Yeong.

I'd highly recommend taking Math 61 before this class (or any upper-division math course, for that matter) to get a solid foundation in writing basic proofs. With that said, the proofs we were asked to do on the exams were very straightforward and mostly consisted of basic theorems related to field and vector space properties, we weren't asked to prove the more involved theorems related to linear algebra on exams. The first part of the course focused on building a strong foundation of understanding for fields and vector spaces, and focused a bit more on learning the theorems and basic proofs. The second part of the course mostly covered eigenvalues and eigenspaces, and was more computation-based. It's a bit more rigorous than what you learn in 33A, but the content is pretty similar.

Overall, this class is definitely one of the most manageable math upper-divs, especially if you have a solid foundation in logic and proofs. Professor Yeong is a great professor to take it with.

I really liked Professor Yeong! She was super clear in lecture and provided a lot of resources to help us succeed on the exams: extra practice problems, notes, and recorded lectures. Also she just somehow fosters a vibe in class that's really enjoyable and made me actually want to go to class b/c it was so fun. Algebra is also just super interesting and mind blowing. Definitely recommend!
