Never went to class or discussion, they were useless. Reading the textbook chapters and understanding/doing well on the HW was enough to prepare for exams, so I liked the simplicity of what I had to do to be successful in this class. Overall though it was an extremely meh experience with a pretty inadequate professor, but if you like individual study I would recommend taking this class and never going, and you’ll do just fine. Her practice tests are very similar to the actual tests which is nice. I think most reviews are overly harsh because the professor just lectured word for word from the textbook (but somehow poorly lol), so if you cut out the middleman you should be just fine.
Wern Yeong does not actually teach you anything. She merely just reads off of the textbook and jots things down quickly and messily on the board, but is terrible at answering questions and does not make the material digest-able whatsoever. It's impossible to actually learn anything from her lectures. If you take this class, be prepared to learn all of your material through the textbook on your own time.
Her tests were also insane. Midterm 1 was very difficult. And THE FINAL was out of this world. It was so insanely difficult and such a terrible reflection of everything we were expected to learn this year. Do not take a class with Yeong if you can avoid it.
I would not recommend taking this class. Professor said 70% average on midterm was good enough because it's passing. Poor lecturer. Prof. said that she'll make practice final easy but the actual final hard, like what? I got every solution on a midterm correct, but got an 85% because I didn't show "enough work" on the simplest problem and questions expected solutions in different forms that weren't explicitly stated.
Math 32b is notoriously the hardest math lower division, and taking the class with Wern made that experience an utmost reality.
Wern is an extremely kind and gentle person. Yes, it's Wern's first year teaching here, but honestly, the entire scheme of the class was so absurd. Lectures were taught from the textbook, but the explanations seemed so unabsorbable! Reading the textbook helped me a lot with Midterm 2, but for me, Midterm 1 and FINAL were just NOT it.
I cannot forget to mention that there is basically zero partial credit for the exam questions; it is insane. I spent a good while chatting back and forth with a TA to justify some partial points, but still nothing. For those who are genuinely great at math, you'll do well in this class, but overall, it was not a pleasant experience for me. I am no genius, but I do put in effort to learn; this section didn't make it any easier.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I gave up going to lectures Week 2, and I am glad I saved three hours a week. There is no reason to attend class unless you want the book to be read out to you but made more confusing. The problem sets are somewhat manageable, but way longer than other classes I have taken. The first midterm and the final was abnormally difficult. I was told the final was intentionally made more difficult because the second midterm had a high average. The final was an absolute shitshow where I spent equal time solving the questions (or rather scratching and redoing the work) and staring into my friends' faces with an equally reciprocated sense of dread, disbelief and WTFness. If you don't care about your GPA or actually learning, then take this class, otherwise run.
Trust me and avoid this class. It's for your own good. Yeong manages to make the textbook's concepts seem more complicated than they already are and just doesn't want the class to get a good average. She literally made sure to make the final harder because she found the class average for midterm 2 to be too high (it was in the 80s) and whenever asked a clarification question during a lecture she wouldn't know how to answer and would make presume to make us more confused. The homework assignments are literally graded so harshly for no reason and the midterms are unnecessarily hard. I would never recommend this class to anyone.
Confusing lectures, hard tests. 0/10. She literally said "The average was too high (literally an 84) so I'll be making the final harder so the class average is lower"?? The final was HARD btw. Super unclear lectures, really boring. Take it with someone else if you can.
If I wanted to have the textbook and its examples read out to me, I would have used the audiobook function on the textbook. Class sucks, this professor is worse. If you think you can learn the content without lectures, go ahead, tests are not tricky. Id avoid though.
