Professor Conley is amazing. I had him for two quarters and I wish I could have him as my teacher again. He is the best.
-Helpful during office hours and really gets things to make sense
-Tests are extremely fair and very similar to his midterm and final review packets
-Classes are entertaining hes very funny
Take him if you can- use your first pass because his classes tend to fill up very quickly. He is an awesome professor- it always amazed me how he never even used lectures slides or referred to any notes, he just had everything in his head so he writes the notes along w/ you. He also color codes everything and organizes all the material on the board so it's easy to digest and write down.
Conley really does all he can to help students- he will stay after his scheduled OH to go over concepts at times and he will stay as long as possible for the review sessions to cover everyone's questions. He is also very patient and friendly w/ students, and it's clear that he just loves doing what he does, which makes the learning environment better. He will also curve the exams or grades only if it helps students, or take out problems in the hw if he feels like the questions were not fair.
I found the midterms to be pretty easy, and I did not have a strong math background (only took up to precalc in HS, and I was a transfer student who hadn't taken a real math course in years). the midterms were almost identical to the practice exams, w/ basically just different numbers or slightly different scenarios. Make sure you attend the review sessions cuz they help a lot.
However, I found the final to be considerably more challenging than the midterms. There were some surprise questions I was not prepared for, and overall it seemed like ppl in my class did worse on the final than in the midterms. I'd make sure to study well in advance for the final if I were you- I think everyone studied for the final like it was the midterms and basically waited until the review session to really start studying, which obviously was not good since the final deviated from the practice exams considerably more than the midterms did.
Labs were pretty challenging imo but luckily I had a good ta. Even if you're ta "isn't good" you can go to another TA's OH so I would not worry. Just make sure you go to OH if you're stuck on any problems, and don't feel bad cuz the majority of students in my lab section struggled w/ the coding
Will not be taking another class with this professor. Lectures were long, drawn out, and unclear. I took this professor as reviews said classes were clear and he was helpful but that was not the case. Gave ambiguous study guides for tests, making the final extremely difficult by involving concepts not covered/very little covered in class. This professor is not worth it, definitely look for a different one.
Conley is very good at explaining topics, patient, clearly loves teaching, and cares about student learning. Class moves a little slowly (so is sometimes boring) but in my opinion, it's nice to have a class that doesn't move at lightening speed like most other core bio major classes. It reduces stress and therefore encourages enjoyment.
Professor Conley is literally the best professor I have had and probably will ever have. He's an engaging lecturer, and explains concepts super thoroughly. You can tell he cares so much about his students, having ridiculously long review sessions and always staying longer than his specified office hours. He stayed 30-45 minutes over regularly to make sure all questions were answered, only leaving when he had another commitment to run to-- and he would literally RUN to maximize his time. He's also super willing to answer questions after class, staying until every student has asked all of their questions. If I ever felt confused leaving a lecture, I was always super clear on everything after talking to him. This man is a GOD in all ways, his office hours are ridiculously helpful (especially for coding!!!) and he never makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Even though the coding can be tough, he is SO helpful and makes everything really clear-- seriously go to his coding office hours. He also makes a genuine effort to get to know his students, asking everyone he doesn't know their name (and he will remember it if you go to office hours semi-consistently) and how they're doing. I literally could not give this man more praise if I tried, he's such a genuinely kind professor and his passion has shined through in all of the interactions I've had with him (which are a fair few). I'm honestly so bummed that this quarter got put online, solely because I'm lacking the live Will Conley content I need in my life. I literally love this man. If you can, take Conley!! He will EXCEED your expectations. :)
Took this class for Winter 2020. Conley is a good Professor, however, he tends to go really fast in lectures and go over time everyday in class. Tests are very hard, confusing and are nothing like the review packets (be prepared, not believe other review on here). Computer labs are a drag and are graded on correctness with the TA’s not properly teaching student how to do them. Studied 3 days for midterm and got a C+, studied 6 days and got an A- on final. Overall grade was and A-. Conley is very passionate about the topic, however, he expects us to put in the same amount of passion as he have for the subject and that can be very stressful.
Conley is an amazing professor, great lecturer and very willing to help. His review sessions are very long and very thorough and you can tell he puts his heart into his work. Class is very easy, labs were kinda tricky, but it is easy to get credit in them and to get an A in the class.
Professor Conley is the best professor you will ever have at UCLA. He is the best math teacher and the most engaging lecturer I have ever met. He's kind and takes his time with everything. I'm writing this review after getting off a 6 HOUR final review session held by him from 6-11:15 pm not to mention hes been holding OH since 2 pm today so literally has not had a break. This man cares about his students more than himself; he is constantly going above and beyond for our benefit. LS30A is easy if you just pay attention. The concepts are simple or straightforward not to mention if you have even the slightest background in calculus the majority of it is just based on that. If you don't, don't worry because Conley makes it so easy. I cannot stress this enough--Dr, Conley is the best. Take this class with him if you can. LS30 series is generally pretty easy from what I've seen/experienced so far. Conley if ur reading this....ily
Conley is honestly a gift to mankind. He really loves what he teaches, and it really shows in his lectures. He also is just overall so kind, sweet, and cares a lot for his students. Nowhere is this clear than his review sessions, where he stays for usually at least 3 hours concisely reviewing all important concepts from the class up to that point while making sure to answer all student questions. There were many times where I wasn't really paying attention in class or really following along with the material, but then I would go to the review session and learn EVERYTHING. Conley is great, but I do have some problems with this class. The material is often long and drawn out over several classes when it could be explained in a much shorter time. Also, I thought the textbook really provides no value and instead only served to confuse me as I tried to do the homework assignments. If you have trouble with the HW, go to his office hours.
Lastly, the coding lab for this class honestly SUCKED. While I think the actual coding itself wasn't hard conceptually, the way assignments were worded made them very confusing, vague, and frustrating. They were a lot of times just a waste of time, and I really think some of the assignments could be revised to be simpler and easier to understand rather than them trying to connect it to biological systems. Just work with your classmates, and you'll get through them.
So, if you can, take this class with Conley and GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS. While some aspects of the class suck in my opinion, Conley is one of the best professors.
