Okay to be totally real, Professor Lucas is kinda scary. He can be very intense when students argue with him, he is highly critical and often dishes out some confidence shattering critique. You will likely end up designing close to a hundred original/revised album covers. The pace doesn't seem crazy, usually just assigning 5 designs at a time, HOWEVER. That shit piles up when the ideas run dry. You will be making a book dedicated to one song (of your choice). So you better love the hell out of this song bc you will be listening to it and working with it for an ETERNITY. You're MAKING a book. Get ready to youtube bookbinding and prep your wallet to blow $200-500 in the print lab and blick.

All of that said, I have never learned so much in an art class before. I came out of the class with HUGE respect for book designers and formal typographers because it is such an INSANE process. Lucas' harshness made me work super hard to keep all my designs unique and varying bc I was afraid of him lol. Despite how ruthless crit can be, Lucas can pinpoint each element that he does or does not like the look of. It wound up being incredibly helpful because you begin start to notice things in ur own designs that are easy to overlook. Whole thing is done is InDesign so get cozy with that.

Some tips:
- DO NOT DRAW WITH TEXT. HE HATES IT AND WILL SHAME YOU.

- he does not like square books. if you want your book to be square you better be ready to back your choice up with a seriously creative concept.

- do NOT lose your syllabus. everything important is there and no where else, and he will not give you another.

- prepare before you have to meet with him, but listen to his advice, he's got an inCREDIBLE eye for design.

- keep up with ur process book. NO one in my class did and it is not what you want to be dealing with when you're cramming to finish your at 4 am before crit.
