**FIAT LUX RATING** I took Professor Roy's Fiat Lux (The Sociological Construction of History, if I remember correctly) and it was awesome. We were assigned one chapter of his book each week and asked to submit three discussion questions before class. No midterm, no final, and to be honest, you don't really have to read to participate in class. You do have to present one of the topics, but basically you ask the class some questions vaguely associated with the topic and you're good to go! The class could be awkward if nobody was willing to talk, but Roy is good at facilitating discussion and filling in silences with interesting tidbits. Professor Roy himself is a really cool guy. Fun prof to have in a small group setting and extremely knowledgeable about his subject... he loves to talk about his curly hair and always has a Fresca haha. Overall: an EASY Fiat Lux worth taking if you have any interest in the subject!

I took this class Winter 2002. It's a very interesting class, and Professor Roy organizes it well (in terms of lectures). First off, this is a writing class. Grades are dependent on papers and how well you do on them. There is also involvement with reading (4 books), but it compliments the lectures really well. I learned from both the reading and the lectures. But reading the first book (about journalism) in entirety was useless. Mainly because the issue was glazed over fairly quickly. If there is one thing I would criticize it would be that the reading, although moderate, is at times unnecessary. But Prof. Roy engages his students in class: asks them questions, asks their opinions, etc. This is a tactic that shows a professor is interested in his class, and not just in himself and his own lecture. Professor Roy also has a TA named Kathy Lee, who is excellent and provides great discussions. She is both knowledgable and approachable. I recommend this class/professor--mainly because it is a fair class and for Roy, who teaches with simplicity, bet never at the expense of intellect.

Professor Roy is AMAZING. His lectures are thoroughly engaging and he likes to pose questions that elicit response from students. You don't have to talk in lecture if you don't want to, but often times students feel compelled to share their own points of view. The course went over the historical and social construction of time, space, gender, race, and class and the intersections between them. There were 2 papers (5-6 pages) worth 25% each and both had a list of about 5 prompts your could choose from. I wrote both of these the night before and got a B+ and A-. The final paper was supposed to be 10-15 pages about addressing the social construction of anything not discussed in class and was worth 30% (still waiting on this grade). Participation in discussion makes up the other 20%. If you don't like talking in class, the TA still gives you credit if you post on the online discussion forum or if you see her in office hours. Professor Roy is extremely approachable outside of class and it is easy to carry on a dialogue with him for so long! Within the first couple of weeks, he knew many of the students' names who asked questions or shared in class... not because he had met them outside of class, but because he would ask the TA names of students who like to participate. Definitely one of the greatest professors I've ever encountered at UCLA--thoroughly concerned with student learning and growth. Take his class if you can!
