Here's the deal with History 8B: Summerhill is a great lecturer. He's funny and well organized and really likes to lecture. But, the readings are almost always extremely long and dense, and many of the multiple choice questions come from obscure factoids in them, not the lectures. He also missed a number of lectures this last quarter for personal reasons, and he'll tell you up front that when that happens, he will make no effort help you catch up. This class is entertaining and enjoyable, but you HAVE to do the reading. And when he gives you some possible essay questions, make sure to study for ALL of them, not just two out of three. Invariably, the one you didn't study for is the one you end up having to write.

Summerhill quickly became my favorite professor at UCLA. I took 97e in fall 2014, and by around week 4 I was super into the class. You HAVE to be involved in the discussions, but the reading is reasonable, and relatively interesting. I wouldn't say this is an easy class, but I would say that Summerhill motivates you to want to put the work in. He's fair, and he makes a real point of contributing energy and passion to his classes. Summerhill is the type of professor you always hope you will find.

Spring 2019 - I had Summerhill for Modern Brazil last quarter and I loved him so I took him again for this class. He is a great professor but I found this class to be quite challenging just because I had a hard time keeping up with which country is doing what. The material is kind of a lot in this class because all of Latin America is quite broad and difficult to keep straight. Summerhill does a good job of teaching and kept me engaged through lectures. He also had all of the readings except one posted online so you don't have to pay a fortune for books. He's an outstanding lecturer, the class can just be a little tricky because of how broad it is.
