Don't take Mortaza as your TA or this course is not gonna be the "easiest class" you've ever taken :)

The class was online asynchronous which worked great for me. Besides that, the class is honestly so easy.
- It consists of you watching the lectures each week and completing a quiz based on that week's lectures/readings.

- There are two textbooks required which are written by the professor and for us he ended up providing us with pdf versions of the textbooks as well as the rest of the material is also provided to you.

- There are 4 assignments spread out throughout the quarter, which were pretty easy, my TA was just such a harsh grader.

- Discussion posts due every other week (one week discussion, one week assignment) that are not really based on the readings/ lecture. They were fun ones tbh such as " pick an African Country that starts with the first letter of your name and post what you found interesting."

- Since it was asynchronous, attendance in discussion was required and there you talk about the readings of the week

This class was fully asynchronous and online and all lectures and assignments were posted at the start of the quarter allowing students to go at their own pace. Material was very manageable, there were 4 written assignments which were all pretty straight-forward and did not take too long to complete. The weekly quizzes had 2 attempts each, but I only ever needed one. Open book and easy, mostly based off of lecture. Lectures were super engaging and his set-up was phenomenal even for the pre-recorded format I think it was perfectly suited for this class since he was able to show us all the props and knick-knacks he collected while living in South Africa. You could really see his passion through the amount of effort put into his video lectures and high quality documentary-like videos. Would definitely take again especially as a STEM student wanting an easy GE, no regrets at all!
Discussion was a bit challenging at times, but it all depends on your TA as with most classes. Usually just an open discussion though about either readings (which most people didn't do since they were only used in discussion) or class materials.
The books we were asked to read were only used for one paper and the occasional discussion section so pretty easy to find quotes online if you are running low on time and cannot read them, even though they are both very interesting!

One thing I love about this class is that you can do things on your own time! Personally, I did not read any of the books (except for certain excerpts for the project) so I don't recommend buying any. I still learned a great amount, even though I've never conversed or was in a classroom (online or in person) with Professor Worger. This class is easy, but you definitely need to put in the work yourself! One thing I'd watch out for is your TA. Your assignments are worth a huge chunk of your grade so take your time! I thought I did pretty well, but my TA was strict over the smallest things. It forced me to improve though!

I really enjoyed this class I learned a lot and the assigned readings were actually very engaging just there were some weeks where the reading was a lot. This class was extremely easy and I love the self-paced structure. As long as you somewhat do the readings and watch the lectures you'll do great.

This class is so inspiring and the professor is so passionate about the topic to the point that he transmits it to the students. I absolutely loved his class and changed my perspectives of not just Africa but the world itself. I 100% recommend this class to anyone because it’s very interesting and engaging! I actually want to take another history class with professor Worger because he’s the best history professor I’ve ever had.
The workload can be a good amount but that is expected from a 5 units class. There are quizzes every week but you get 2 attempts and they’re not tricky. As long as you have seen the lectures, you’ll get 100%

This class is ez money. I never talked to Professor Worger once, all your interaction is with your TA. Shoutout to Lisa Kahn, she was the best part about this class. Assignments are pretty easy, quizzes are super easy, and I watched lectures at 1.7x speed.

super easy class but also super impactful. as a stem major, I don’t take many history classes but i’m glad i took this one because it really change my view of life. the lectures are recorded and well produced (easy to follow even at 1.25 speed). the quizzes are easy if you’ve watched the lectures and done the readings. there were a couple 1-2 page essays and one 1000 word paper but they’re honestly super easy too and graded very leniently. i enjoyed going to discussion every week to hear others opinions and takeaways from the weeks material and even though participation was mandatory, the ta made sure that everyone got their points by the end of discussion so it’s not one person hogging all the points. 10/10 would recommend this class if you need an easy ge or just wanna learn about african history.
