Took 31B over the summer with Xiang.

For the record, I don't think the ratings above reflect Zhengyu Xiang since he doesn't teach any engineering classes...

With that said, I don't know what the heck the other reviews are so negative about. Taking Xiang was a wonderful, WONDERFUL experience. I dropped out of Antieau mid-quarter because I didn't understand the material since he went over it so fast and didn't teach in a way that was very understandable. Whereas with Xiang, I found him to be EXTREMELY helpful during office hours.

So what if he has a thick Chinese accent? Deal with it and sit towards the front. If you're diligent in doing the homework and making sure you understand the material, you won't mind that he goes over the material in lecture rather briskly. Besides, he welcomes questions during office hours. In fact, because I went to his office hours so much, he raised my grade from an A- to an A because he saw how much I had improved and how much effort I put into the class.

tldr; Don't be fooled, he's the best math professor I've taken at UCLA (although I've heard Weisbart is a boss).

Took Math 31B with Prof. Xiang.

Professor Xiang knows his material. However, he does not know how to convey the material to others. Taking notes during class won't help - I copied the whole board and still had no clue what he did/how he did it. He rushes through problems, giving us barely enough time to copy it down. It becomes mindless transcription, and looking at my notes after lecture I realized nothing he said sank into my brain.

Also, he has a very, very strong Chinese accent which makes it difficult to keep up with the material or even understand what he's saying. Even worse? His voice is very monotone, and he clears his throat loudly about once every two minutes. So sitting through lecture is very, very, VERY tedious.

Take anyone else. ANYONE!
