Like most reviews said, THIS CLASS IS NOT AN EASY A. I got an A for all three quarters, but I worked my tail off for it. I honestly think Sun Laoshi is a good professor, she lectures mostly in Chinese but most of the grammar concepts should be fairly straightforward if you speak Chinese (which is assumed for this class). If you are rusty with vocab words & characters, I would recommend looking over them ahead of time so you are not cramming for a quiz the night before. There are two quizzes per week (1 per lecture), one on vocab words and the other on Chinese phrases. If you are keeping up with the vocabulary and reviewing words, you should be fine. There are other miscellaneous assignments as well, such as workbook and character HW, but those are pretty easy. Exams are pretty easy when you take it, but Sun Laoshi grades very harshly and does not curve the class, even when the highest score for a midterm was a low 90. You must be very careful when writing sentences because even the smallest mistakes will cost you points. Overall, I think I learned a decent amount of Chinese and my speaking has improved, and I don't think it would've happened with an "easier" class. If you don't want to be as stressed, take the class P/NP.

Professor Sun is a caring professor and teaches well. The workload can be a lot at times but I appreciate the fact that she is pretty understanding especially during these times. The homework and midterm exam is fair, as she taught everything that were in these assignments. Overall really enjoyed this class!

Professor Sun only teaches the chinese courses designed for native speakers. She WILL make you learn!!! On top of effectiveness though, is a LOT of work. No sweat though, if you do 90% of what she asks you to do, you'll get that A or A-. Beware, the courses are NOT friendly toward those people who truly aren't native speakers. If you think you have enough bulls$^t skills to fake it aand get in, you're wrong. It will rapidly become apparent that you don't belong and you'll be shamed out of class. All in all, if you really enjoy a energetic teacher and want to review chinese, go for it!

Sun Laoshi is a bit of a mixed bag. She initially appears genuine and kind, but I began to see her as tubborn, meticulous, sometimes superficial. By the end of my third quarter with her, I wanted to get out of that class. Hearing her voice four days a week, three quarters in a row was one of the most depressing things in my life.

She does an okay job teaching, but there is very little variety from day to day, and her class generally loses interest really fast and nobody talks. And don't be fooled by her apparent sweet demeanor, she is very choosy in who she favors. Too traditional of a Chinese thinker as well, some of her ideology is absolutely ridiculous. Hearing her talk about politics made me want to vomit. Tolerable only to an extent.

If you intend to take an intensive summer Chinese course that will rip the blood from your veins and send you howling mad in the middle of the night, make sure you take Professor Sun. Her teaching style emphasizes participation in all respects. Should you need help, she will help you, and is always happy and willing to. I took a summer class, so we all had to work like oxen just to keep up with the momentum, though we only had one or two assignments a week. Everyday there's a 20-word vocab quiz\363if not, it means that you're taking a test. KEEP UP WITH THE CLASS. (Even Prof. Sun started to look a little pale by sixth week.) Our textbook was well chosen, and Prof. Sun did well to stick with it and explain words and structures that the authors had overlooked. She is fair and helpful, but best of all, she makes you learn the language. Take Prof. Sun and you won't regret it\363you'll even be confident enough to say it in Chinese.
