This class was very demanding but I learned a lot. Nogami-sensei teaches with Socratic method: you're expected to study the material beforehand then she cross-examines you during class. For students comfortable listening to Japanese, this is very beneficial and helps you improve speaking a lot. But for students less so, it will be very stressful and you're likely to fall further behind. Also, she doesn't really go over kanji, so you are expected to learn it on your own time.
If you're serious about learning Japanese, definitely take her class. Just know that you'll spend a lot of time studying and probably still not get an A.

ETA after 100C: Everything I wrote still stands. Workload increases by the quarter and she is not an easy grader. If you're thinking of adding this as a 4th class, I would proceed with caution.

I was the one, the only one that actually wrote I liked her class down there. Now I have downvoted my own review. I have taken both 100A and 100B with her, and I plan to stop there as she has made Japanese learning a torture to me mentally and physically. I know majority of students are starting with 100A, so I have came back to help new students to select a better class for themselves.
I have written a lot more in my review of her in 100B. Go read that one. I will paraphrase the ending of what I wrote over there:
if she is the only choice for 100A, then take her, she is a good lecturer. The class is tough, but you'll be fine as long as she doesn't dislike you. However, if there is another lecturer, take that one immediately. For your own good.

If you enjoyed UCLA's Japanese class so far, good luck you won't enjoy it anymore after Nogami's class. Her class is hard and stressful. She asks tons of difficult questions during class and gives you kind of a look if you can't answer it. You need a lot of self-preparation before class and understand the materials 101%. Her grading is also very strict. Expecting us to write a formal Japanese Sakubun with styles that only Japanese natives MIGHT use. I understand this is for our own good but it is just too much for students who just get into 100.

If there is another option or if you are not a Japanese major, don't try it (Stem major and enjoyed learning Japanese).

Although Professor Nogami was super strict (she would call me out for just sitting improperly or eating during the Zoom call) I did enjoy taking her class. She was always on my case about writing to her properly when sending her emails for the sake of preparing myself to enter the workforce and I did learn some things from our class discussions.

I disagree with the review below about Nogami-sensei. It's true that her class has a very high workload and is rather fast-paced, and that often times she will make you get out of your comfort zone to speak more Japanese, but the class is very structured and revolves around the textbook, and you absolutely know what to expect in class. Preparing for the lecture beforehand is required and if you do that then you're good. Most of the questions she asks are related to the textbook and the grammar points and they're honestly not that hard if you've prepared enough. As for the sakubun, I don't really understand what the complaint is about that. All other Japanese courses also have sakubuns and learning how to use written Japanese is an integral part of learning Japanese. She's also incredibly helpful during office hours and it's really fun to chat with her outside of class because she's not as "strict."

Grading on HWs and sakubuns is a bit harsh, but it's absolutely fair. My Japanese has improved tremendously since taking her class. Understand that this is a 100-level Japanese course. "Advanced" is literally in the course title. She's not expected to hold your hand anymore. If you feel you can't keep up, then honestly you shouldn't be taking this course to begin with.

Nogami sensei is very responsible for every student she has. Her teaching is clear and well-organized. She can be a little strict sometimes but I honestly learned a lot from her classes now that I've finished the series. A few things to keep in mind if you plan to take this class. Try not to be late or get distracted in class cuz she will ask you to answer her questions once she spots that you are off. Start the 宿題 and 作文 earlier cuz they will take some time and she is a bit harsh on grading them. Overall, this is a great class and I definitely recommend to anyone who wants to further improve their Japanese.
Also, for those who consider taking this class online (due to COVID-19), discussions will be held in live and attendance is necessary. There will still be a lot of questions that you need to answer in class and yes she will still call your name so don't change your screen!

Nogami-sensei is my favorite professor I've had taking Japanese at UCLA so far. She can be really funny and in class she really forces you to engage with the material in a way that makes sure you actually understand all of it. Her class is probably not the class to take if you're not really invested in learning Japanese, though, because it really makes you work hard. You can't get away with not preparing for class because she'll call on you and you won't be able to answer, which can be stressful but I think ultimately makes you a better student. I think she can be a little intimidating and it's certainly not that easy of a class. The tests aren't that bad if you've been paying attention in class, but she grades the written assignments pretty tough and you definitely have to stay really on top of everything to do well. Ultimately I really feel like taking her class helped me get a lot better at Japanese so it's not hard for hard's sake, but while I enjoyed it a lot it might not be the class for everyone.
