Fall 2025 - The professor is very knowledgeable and engaging during lecture. Her slides have lots of info, but it does not get posted. Writing down every word can get difficult at times, but if you are attentive to the actual lecture it is easy to understand. The midterm and final are in-class essays which you will get two prompt choices for and have time to prepare them. On the day of, she will pick one, so you need to have both ready. To do good on these, you should keep up with the reading, since you need to cite the authors as evidence. She does not specify how many authors you need to have cited, but the more, the better. You should also integrate real-world examples from her lectures to support the theories of the authors. I don’t believe she gives perfect scores on the exams, but it balances out with the quizzes. There are quizzes after each lecture based on the readings which make up the majority of your grade. These are easy points, so make sure you don’t miss any. I wish she was more clear about her grading because I felt that it was inconsistent on the exams. She will not round at all, keep that in mind. I would recommend joining her office hours prepared with some ideas on what to discuss for the exam so she can guide you, as she can be a bit harsh at times. The class is interesting, especially if you like IR already.

Fall 2023 - Professor Lee was manageable but not the easiest Professor to take. Your grade is based on a small quiz at the end of each class (which are easy to miss and close at midnight but also very easy), the midterm, and the final. For this quarter the midterm and final were in person and no notes. Two prompts are given one week before and then she chooses one the day of. If you are able to memorize and cite at least 8 sources but name, you should be able to get an 80% or above. She isn’t too harsh of a grader. Lectures could seem boring at times but she is very impressive and education as a Professor. This class was honestly pretty stressful at times because she didn’t update the midterm or final grade til Winter Break. Although she doesn’t take attendance, you do have to go everyday in order to take the quizzes. I would say she’s a 8/10 easiness, workload is a 2/10 regularly but once midterms or finals come around and you need to prep I would say the stress level is 9/10. If you have a good work ethic an A is definitely manageable in this class.

Winter 2024 - Best professor I've had a UCLA so far. Extremely engaging and thoughtful lectures. She is very sure to make sure everyone understands the concepts she is teaching and encourages discussion throughout the lectures. Very fair grader as well. Class is set up for you to succeed, you just have to understand the concepts discussed for the midterm and final, which are both in-class essays. Highly recommend this class and professor.

Fall 2019 - This is not a very tough course, and the professor is very friendly and easy-going. The grading mainly distributes on the research paper, attendance, participation, and quizzes. It is important to attend lectures because that is where you get your attendance and participation points. Lectures and reading materials will help you in preparing quizzes. The professor is very inclusive in terms of the research paper topics, as long as it is related to Chinese politics and the environment. You can always discuss with the professor about the research paper, she is very responsive, and she gives very useful feedback to help you boost your grade.
