Quarter: Fall 2020
Grade: A+

Fairly easy GE, definitely interesting content! All of her lectures are pre recorded and although they serve as good background info, notes aren't really required since the grading scheme is 90% weekly reflections (only 6 of these weekly reflections are graded but you can submit up to 9). My TA jessica required quotes from the readings/documentary for the weekly reflection. She was a bit slow on grading but pretty generous in the beginning as we all got our bearings. The workload isn't too bad most of the time. The documentaries are pretty interesting, you can watch the lectures on 2x unless you really want to quote it, and some of the readings are dense but overall good stuff to learn. Discussion section is mandatory since attendance and participation via group discussion posts count for 10% of your grade. It's possible to get all the work done for one week of the class in one day if you're productive, too.

Quarter: Winter 2021
Grade: A+

This is one of the easiest GEs I've taken and surprisingly informative too! The professor and all the TAs were extremely kind and understanding. I would highly recommend this if you want an easy class and have even the slightest interest in learning more about gender.

For Winter 2021, there were no exams - only weekly assignments which were 1.5 to 2 page double-spaced essays reflecting on the materials for that week (documentaries, articles, textbook readings). They took the top 6 scores out of 9 total essays, which meant you could skip some weeks. I never watched the prerecorded lectures since they were not mandatory. 90% of the grade was these weekly essays and 10% was participation, which meant simply showing up to discussion for my TA.

Loved it and def recommend!! I took this as an incoming first year and was scared given that it was my first quarter and everything was online, but this class is not only super easy but sooo interesting. Other people have been leaving comments about how hard the prof is to understand, but honestly it didn't matter too much because your grade is based on how you condense the weekly readings and documentaries as opposed to what the prof is saying. I didn't think it was at all a huge barrier so I really wouldn't worry about the prof being unclear. She's also super sweet and beyond willing to help you during office hours. your grade in this class is based on 6 weekly reflections that are graded by the TA, no final or midterm. Honestly everything we learned in this class is so applicable to daily life and just so eye opening in general. Made me consider a minor in gender studies, super great course and no textbook purchases needed!!!

Quarter: Fall 2020
Grade: A+

I took this class Fall 2020. Her lectures were pre-recorded and they weren't mandatory (I didn't watch them). There are no exams. Your grade is based on 6 weekly reflections that are based on the weekly readings. They are 10 points each, 2 pages long, double spaced, and are graded by your TA. Discussion attendance is mandatory since participation makes up the other part of your grade. Discussion was interesting since you talk about the weekly readings. Overall, this was a very easy class and I would recommend it.

I thought I would be interested in this class, but I was honestly bored the entire time. There are weekly readings that can get kind of lengthy (60 pages sometimes) and 6 writing quizzes, in which she asks a question in relation to the reading and you have to write a page response. They are sometimes in class and sometimes in section, but she doesn't tell you which weeks she is giving them and which weeks she isn't. You can drop the lowest 2 grades. Midterm was an easy self-reflection paper. Wrote it 3 hours before it was due and turned it in 10 minutes late and got 100%. Grades on writing quizzes, midterm, and final depends on your TA. I never got below 85% on anything. Final was changed to a take-home essay due to the TA strike, but I ended with an A. She offers extra credit opportunities, but I didn't do them. Most of the time during lecture I couldn't understand the professor because of her heavy accent, but she was very sweet and was always encouraging people to reach out to her via email. We watched a lot of videos in class and it got so boring that I pretty much stopped going, which isn't smart because if you miss the quizzes during class or section, you can't make them up. Was easy tho.

I was looking forward to this quarter with Professor Korkman and I was so excited to finally take this course. During lectures, she allowed for amazing discourse and insight from students. The readings were sometimes dense, mostly interesting, and towards the end mostly contemporary. It makes for a great intro class and you learn basic foundational information to apply to other fields of social study.

I was kinda disappointed that the last 3 weeks of this course did not happen due to the UAW strike and since this professor did not want to cross the picket line, lectures and sections never resumed. Of course, that was out of the department's control, but I would 100% take this course again if it means being able to finish it.

There is one midterm paper where you reflect on your experiences as a gendered person. There were supposed to be 6 Quizzes (which were SAQs about the weekly reading) and your two lowest grades were to be dropped, but scheduling and the strike interfered so we did not have quizzes 5 or 6.

Professor Korkman was very kind and gave insightful lectures. I had no previous intention of taking a gender studies course, but because it fulfilled a GE requirement I decided to take it. Her lectures were very engaging and she included the class in many discussions. The coursework was not too heavy with a couple of readings a week. Some of the readings, however, were very dense and it was hard to grasp the main idea easily. The final was also not too challenging. Overall, I enjoyed this class and would recommend it.

A fairly easy GE.

You don't really have to go to lectures since very little is covered, but sometimes there are pop quizzes. I would often go to lecture but just browse the internet the whole time.

You do have to do the readings for the quizzes, but they are short, like ~30 minutes per week.

The midterm was writing a reflection on gender in our own life. The final was a few short essay questions that were pretty simple.

No homework.

I would recommend, it was pretty chill and if you are interested in feminism then you won't mind this class.

The only thing that is awkward it is a required category to write about race in your paper, and if you are white, you might not have very much to write about.
