English Composition, Rhetoric, and Language
Description: Lecture, three hours. Enforced requisite: satisfaction of Entry-Level Writing requirement or course 2 or 2I (C or better). Not open for credit to students with credit for course 3D, 3DS, 3E, or 3SL. Rhetorical techniques and skillful argument. Analysis of varieties of academic prose and writing of minimum of 20 pages of revised text. Completion of course with grade of C or better satisfies Writing I requirement. Letter grading.

She is a very interesting character. She cares about working with you, but she is very hard with grading. I felt I deserved an A in her class and ended up with a B+. I felt part of that was due to the fact that I got unlucky with my partners because neither wanted to put that much effort into the paper to improve their grades. If you don't like working with others on papers, I would not recommend taking her class. Other than that, the readings were interesting and it wasn't very heavy on my class load. Easy to get an A on the work grade portion. I am selling the course reader for her class if anyone is interested. I believe it's $35 in the UCLA store and considering I took no notes in it and it is in almost perfect condition, I'm willing to sell it for $25. Text me if interested **********.

Fall 2016 - Great professor! He even wrote me a letter back! He is very helpful in a lot of ways, and provide amazingly effective feedback as long as you come to his office hour. He recommends using electronic textbook, "The Everyday Writer", I have the PDF version for $10, text me at **********.

Fall 2016 - Grading in this class is very subjective. I brought my essay into her office hours a few days before it was due for revisions, and she gave me a bunch of revisions to make. Then I asked her, "If I were to hand in this essay as it is, what would I get?". And she said, "I can't answer that question... I'd have to read everyone else's essays first and then see." That made me mad, because the quality of my writing should not depend on anyone else's. I actually made all the revisions she had told me to make, and only received a B- on the paper. To give y'all a sense of how good a writer I am, I got a 3 on the AP Lang & Comp exam, and only answered 39 out of 50 of the multiple choice questions. That's right; I ran out of time and left 11 questions blank, yet my writing was so good that I still passed. There's no reason I should've gotten a B- in composition. She's a chill professor and gives only like 3 essays throughout the quarter though... if you can figure out how to write in such a way that she likes, you should be fine.

Fall 2020 - This is easily one of the best English classes I have taken. Professor Hartenberger takes the time to make the class interesting even during online classes and truly cares for each one of her students. The class consists primarily of three large essays which she takes the time to meet with you one-on-one to edit and you additionally get multiple revisions to go over it. I initially wasn't too thrilled to be taking an English class, but I can now say I truly enjoyed taking this class.

HORRIBLE. This man does not belong at the head of the classroom. He was a TA teaching Engcomp 3 to my class and made a habit of publicly berating the entire class after every assignment. He failed to effectively critique anyone's essays and give constructive help. He is also socially inept, and appeared to hate his job. He rarely came to class on time, and had no apparent lecture prepared. He mostly relied on the input of his students, who, in my experience, were not engaged by him or the material. I didn't do badly in the class, but I know that many with less writing experience did - and this was not the fault of the students, but this TA's inability to convey information properly. It's really a shame that grad students at this school are forced to teach either without enough training or against their will, but it's one of the unfortunate truths about UCLA.
