History of Russia: Culture and Society in Imperial Russia
Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Recommended preparation: course 127B or Russian 90A or 119. Designed for juniors/seniors. Thematic examination of culture and society in Russia during era of state-sponsored Westernization (1689 to 1917). Topics include nobility, peasantry, and village life from serfdom to postemancipation era, urban society, working-class life and thought, women, clergy, religion, popular culture, accommodation, and resistance. P/NP or letter grading.

If you want to pull your hair out and cry for a quarter, take his class. He's the worst professor in the world! The workload is enormous! You're reading about 200 pages a week. His lectures can be interesting, but your hand will hurt by the end of class trying to keep up with him. He has office hours, but he won't reaturn emails even when he says he will. He seems approachable, even nice in person, but he doesn't care about his students. I think he's super jaded and although he knows a lot about Russia, he really needs to get out of teaching.

took prof. getty for 127C. he is a real gem for the history department. his lectures are masterclass. he weaves the lectures seamlessly along with his sense of humour. the class itself consists of a midterm and final. midterm 25% final 75%. the midterm was tricky in itself. all i have to say is to read and make sure you understand the question he is given. I got a B on the midterm. the Final however is a 10 page take home. overall grade i got was an A-.
