Summer 2025 - Love this professor. Best math professor i've ever had. Not sure why his 170E class is not posted as that is what this review is going to be about not 170S. This dude was really down to earth, funny, had shared my weird obession for star wars, sci fi, and fantasy for some reason. Dude was really intelligent had a great sense of humor, very responsive on email, and managed to help me succeed in 32b (i had to repeat the class but the amount of overall from 170e to 32b I think is going to save me). This dude was very helpful, homework problems were really challenging but prepared us well for the exams. Exams were pretty hard but he did let you use all your notes which was pretty nice if they were handwritten (not sure if he does that during a regular quarter probably not). textbook is always written very well in my opinion and was extremely helpful in succeeding in this class. Now i'm in 170s and hating my teacher and missing the 170e days.

Summer 2025 - This professor's format of how this class is structured is very um um um um unfair and does not give enough adequate time for um um um effective learning. There are um um um um weekly quizzes each worth 10% of your grade, every week even one the day before the final exam which is um um um um um um bizarre in my opinion as if you screw up on the final quiz you will may not realize your um um um um um um um um mistake and make the same one on the final, as there is no office hour between the final quiz and final exam. We have optional um um um um um um homework that isn't required, but the homework isn't long enough for me to fully grasp all the concepts we learned in um um um um um class, so I have to do practice problems via the textbook in order to score well on the quizzes and exams. Also the um um um um teacher expects you to have memorized the class content from the previous day on the exam the following day like Tuesday's lecture um um will be on Wednesday's quiz which is very hard for most students to pull off mastering something in 24 hours. This um um um um teacher never responds to email, takes a very long time to post solutions to optional homeworks, notes, solutions to quizzes, etc. Organization and communication are not a um um um um um um um um um strong suit in this class like I would love to have known early that Tuesday's material was going to be on Wednesday’s quiz but no you had to tell me at the last possible second in an email on Tuesday afternoon when I had been studying the whole weekend for the quiz assuming that only last week's material would be on the quiz. And um um um um um Monday was Labor day, like come on, are we being punished for UCLA giving us labor day off, since Tuesday’s material was on Wednesday’s Quiz????? I'm sorry but this teacher loves exams and in order to increase overall learning I think we need graded homeworks and not be forced to master the material in lightning fast speed. The teacher has shown to be quite helpful during office hours though, but his English isn't um um um the greatest and I would appreciate it if he said um a little less. I would not recommend this professor by any means, please ignore this teacher and go get a better grade. I really appreciate his most famous quote “On the fourth biggest Monday we will have the um um um um Midterm.”

Spring 2024 - I often got lost in the lectures and found them very hard to follow. He posts his notes but I found those confusing as well (and so have other people in the class). I feel like he didn't give us enough homework and he ended up testing us on things that we've never even practiced. Since his lectures were confusing and we barely got any homework I wasn't really sure what to study for the final. *He only gave us three homeworks for the entire quarter (each consisting of 5-6 questions). He's a very nice guy and will try to help you if you ask but I just felt like we didn't get enough practice so I was lost for most of the quarter.

Fall 2020 - After reading all those "great" reviews for this professor, I thought its a good choice to take Math 170S as one of my elective class, but I can't describe how awful this class was. Imagine someone just reads you the lecture note pdf that is already uploaded, word by word in slow motion and leaving the questions unsolved, then having a quiz every other week which takes so much time with only 2hr limit time. (Btw if you f*ckup your midterm, quizzes will worth 50% of your grade so really be careful on quizzes). Finally both midterm and final was the worst and impossible to pass since the instructor will be grading it himself with absolutely no partials. My advise: This class is far away from being easy and useful, so don't waste your time on taking Math 170S with LYU and try whole quarter to pass the class, either take someone else or ovoid probability and stats.
