Very good professor. The problems on the homework and tests can sometimes be convoluted. What he talks about in class is definitely more conceptual, whereas the problems on midterms and tests tend to be very technical.

I would not recommend Hempel for 31A, especially for anyone who did not take AP Calculus in high school.
The class has two midterms and a cumulative final. The first midterm had errors in two questions, one of which made the problem unsolvable. She kind of adjusted our grades, but her main solution was saying that we could have corrected the problem by changing one of the numbers and solved it like that (which almost no one did because of how the problem was written). The second midterm did not have any errors but was also quite difficult. The final was far easier than the midterms. I got an A on the final but the midterms brought me down to a B+. This was after having taken IB Math SL which my teacher taught the same as AP Calc. Hempel does allow cheat sheets on all the tests for equations you need to know.
In lecture, she would often start out concepts by showing the proofs, which took time away from learning how to do example problems. To me, the proofs were irrelevant for this math class because there were no proofs on the exams, and the lack of example problems make it much harder to do the homework and understand the material.
Homework is assigned, but you don't have to turn it in. I highly recommend doing the homework and also additional practice problems.
If you're a total math whiz, this class will probably be easy for you, but it may be challenging even for people who thought they were great at calculus in high school. I would really avoid this professor if you have no background in calculus.

Houdayer knows what he's talking about, but he's the only one: his English is unintelligible, embarrassingly so in office hours. If you listen really closely to everything he says, you can pick it up, but in the process you don't pick up the actual mathematical concepts being discussed. It's really easy to zone out in lecture because you don't hear words, only some sort of babbling. He seems concerned about student learning but he doesn't appear to be a teacher by trade.

Professor Hsu is one of the most brilliant math professors I have ever been taught by. Her lectures are incredibly organized, and she gives out these comprehensive sheets every class that effectively summarizes the topic covered in that class. Her homework questions are very simple to do if one revises their class notes and reads that section from the textbook. The homework also helps you gain a better grasp of the different types of sums that can be asked from that section. Her midterms had pretty standard math sums of similar difficulty to that of the homework. She, however, asks a bunch of True or False questions in her midterm and final which are very technical in nature and are worth a lot of points (so remember to learn your theorems and understand your concepts well). Her midterms are definitely lengthy but are pretty possible to finish as long as you don't get stuck on something for too long. Her final, however, was considerably much easier and much more lenient time-wise. Her office hours are extremely helpful only if you have questions that need to be answered and she is very helpful in answering doubts and clearing concepts. She is very approachable and makes an effort to remember your names.
Tip: Something that really helped me with the homework for this class is forming an intimate study group of 2 or more people with whom you discuss the homework on Thursday (as every homework assignment is due on Friday). It helps ensure that you have all the right answers if you were not able to make it to office hours and ensures you finish the homework a day early instead of rushing to finish it later. Homework is worth a good portion of your grade, and it is very easy to mess up so be careful.

I took Math 31A with Sudesh over the summer as a freshman. He genuinely likes teaching and is always ready to clear doubts. His tests are very reasonable, he likes testing your understanding of concepts.

He's not as bad as people say he is. He's organized, concise, and the grading is fair. The final was a bit difficult, but everything is curved. I enjoyed his lectures and I'm taking 31B with him next quarter. It's not an easy A, but it's definitely not super hard either if you do your work!
