DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT A PHYSICS MAJOR OR HAVE AN ABSOLUTE DEVOTION TO THE STUDY OF PHYSICS. THE GUY IS KNOWLEDGEABLE, BUT HE INTENTIONALLY MAKES HIS TESTS DIFFICULT MAINLY TO BREAK YOUR SPIRIT. I'M NOT SURE WHAT LOW AVERAGES ARE SUPPOSED TO TEACH US. HIS LECTURES ARE ORGANIZED, I JUST LOST RESPECT FOR HIM WHEN HE CLAIMED HIS MEMORY WASN'T AS GOOD BECAUSE OF "THINGS HE SMOKES". HMMMM........MAKES ME WONDER WHAT I SHOULD BE LEARNING FROM HIM.

Winter 2023 - Professor Gutierrez is a treasure. I audited his Physics 1BH lectures while enrolled in Professor Bauer's Physics 1B. My philosophy was that if I could even tread water in 1BH, I would thrive in 1B. Gutierrez is smart, funny, and cares deeply about his students' well-being. He explains concepts beautifully and walks through simple, intuitive practice problems before throwing you into the thick of it. Professor Gutierrez gives a break in the middle of the class, allows test corrections, and encourages collaboration. What I appreciate most about Professor Gutierrez is his humility, explaining how "Grades aren't everything" applied to his journey. He clarified that performing suboptimally on one exam doesn't define your grade in his class, and his classroom had the strongest community I've found among CS and EE classes. I highly recommend taking any class he teaches and taking the time to get to know him. Professor Gutierrez is a wealth of knowledge, stories, and compassion.

Winter 2024 - Petta is easily the best professor in the department, no contest. He is very accessible outside of class, extremely welcoming to questions, and is extremely clear in lecture. This class would be impossible without him. With that being said, it is a very tough course, particularly when you hit special relativity. I would only recommend taking this course if you have familiarity in both magnetism and special relativity or else I guarantee you will be lost. The homework is tough, but not if you attend discussion (where the answers are practically given) and work in a group (it's a small class so get to know your classmates). The tests are hit or miss; sometimes manageable, sometimes tough. But Petta typically curves by the end of the quarter so don't worry, his philosophy prioritizes the understanding over the grade.

Winter 2021 - Prof. Rosenzweig is a nice guy who is very knowledgeable and passionate about physics, however I would strongly recommend avoiding his class. It was very painful, and it made me want to never take a physics class again. This class was very challenging and confusing. Although I really disliked this class, it should be noted that Dima Vaido, the TA, was excellent.

Winter 2016 - Overall, Saltzberg is a good professor. His lectures are pretty interesting, and he cares about teaching the material to students. However, his lectures can be a bit difficult to follow sometimes because of the sheer amount of calculus he does on the board, and on top of that he often gets his negative signs mixed up. The TA for this class, Michael, was fantastic, and going to his office hours was very helpful for the weekly homework and understanding the material better. This class can be a bit difficult, especially for those who haven't had prior experience to E&M. However, the curve is made generous so that students focus on learning the material rather than stressing about grades.

Professor Vassiliev seems like he's very smart and knowledgeable in physics, but unfortunately that doesn't make him a good teacher. I had him for Physics 1BH, so maybe it's a different story for his upper division courses, but he had a way of making things more confusing and had little patience when students didn't understand what he was teaching (which was pretty often). He also looks and acts a lot like the bad guy from the Professionals, which creeped me out.
