Fall 2024 - Dr. Ho is, without a doubt, my favorite professor at UCLA. While other reviews provide a great overview of the course structure, I wanted to share my perspective for any psychology majors considering taking her lab class: DO IT! As someone planning to pursue clinical psychology and counseling, I didn’t expect to enjoy the research aspects of psychology as much as I did in this class. I always found research, and especially coding, intimidating, but Dr. Ho’s teaching completely changed my perspective. She has a way of making complex topics, like coding, approachable and manageable. No matter your skill level, she’s incredibly patient and always makes time to help. One of the highlights of the class is how Dr. Ho ties the content to her own research and professional experiences, using anecdotes that make the material more engaging and relatable. The small class size (about 25 students) is another plus, you’re able to build genuine connections with like-minded peers and with Dr. Ho herself, which is such a refreshing change from large lecture halls. I can’t recommend this class enough.

Winter 2019 - Honestly, very disappointing. We barely did anything the entire class besides participation, class assignments, one midterm, and a final paper. Seeing the grade distribution on bruinwalk, I thought the class would be chill but they graded the final paper so hard. I wish they were thorough with their paper instructions because I included everything they asked for yet got a C. Also, the professor is very nice and approachable but she's not very helpful answering emails during finals week. I gave both TA and professor very good reviews but I wish I could take them back because they did not clarify paper instructions nor make an effort to help me outside of their office hours.

Fall 2020 - I believe this was the first time that Professor Mesri taught Psych 126. I bought the required textbook but it was completely unnecessary, as the grade was based on 4 simple assignments (55%) and the final essay (45%). I really enjoyed the lectures and class activities but I would say the grading in the second half of the quarter was pretty tough and at time unclear. The whole class was around setting up a class experiment, conducting it, and writing up a report which ended up being ~20 pages (including title page, references, and tables). Definitely the most writing for a class I've done at UCLA. I learned a lot though and this class is definitely helpful to prepare for psychology research/grad school! If you time manage well, it should be no problem. She also offers extra credit through SONA studies and is very flexible about attendance. Setting up a class GroupMe was also super helpful!
