I too, was told recently [about three hours ago, actually] that dr Garfinkel's bruinwalk page was active by an old classmate. Awesome! As mentioned below, dr Garfinkel is absolutely amazing at what he does, and his brilliance resonates through each and every single mind present in the room. His lectures are fascinating, also as mentioned below, and it is true that his lectures are indescribably captivating. dr Garfinkel incorporates much of his own research into his class, and they too, are amazing. As mentioned below as well, dr Garfinkel is not available 24/7 as any hopeful premed would like, but he instead has amazing teaching assistants like Jane [who, by the way, is actually teaching LS30A during summer session c!] and captain Nguyen and brilliant and helpful classmates like Mike [I think that's how you spell his name, if you ever see this sorry!] who actually would help me with a program called Sage [this cool math modeling program] and general studies :) All-in-all, I loved ls30b, and you'll definitely love it too :)

took: ls30b okay. Let's face it. You're a pre-med, I'm a pre-med. We're both worried about our GPAs, because well, to be quite frank, we both need to go to med school. Well guess what? Put all that b*llsh*t aside, and be prepared to learn some real stuff that will change your life. I'm not saying that this class is insanely hard. No. Quite the contrary. Do yourself a favor and take a look at Prof Garfinkel's ratings from 61 raters. Do you see the bar next to "easiness"? Do you know what makes this class "easy"? It's the brilliance in teaching that Prof Garfinkel possesses and successfully executes. His lectures are never boring, and are in fact, crucial to your success. two 3 hour lectures a week too harsh on you? I've been there, and let me tell you down-to-earth and simply: those three hours will fly by, and you'll in fact, stay afterwards to ask him questions. Have questions that need to be reached to Garfinkel before an exam? No worries. Not only does he provide awesome final reviews, but his teaching assistants are incredibly diligent. They will respond when all else fails. They are the A-team. Also, find smart classmates and form a study group. This man deserves much more attention than what he has received so far, and I really do believe that his class will change your life. This is college, and you're here to learn. You will learn more from this class, than any of the other b*llsh*t classes that you've probably taken to get free 'As'. End of rant, and God bless prof Garfinkel.

Professor Garfinkel is very concerned with student learning, and goes beyond his call of duty to ensure that the student fully understands and appreciates the deep concepts that he teaches. Dr. Garfinkel is more than a professor who teaches- he is a superhuman, absolutely brilliant combination of both inspiring lecturer, and genius. Most brilliant minds are unable to simplify difficult concepts for the masses, but every word of Dr. Garfinkel combines to simplify the most difficult of concepts (chaos theory, bifurcations, various models) If I could take him every quarter, I would. You must take his classes.

the person below is actually incorrect- Dr. Garfinkel is in fact, a Woodrow Wilson fellow, not a Truman Scholar. Nonetheless, everything that has been said about him is true. His charisma is undeniable, and his passion for teaching resonates amongst all students inside the room. He breaks down difficult concepts into easily understandable words- Albert Einstein once said that a true genius is capable of breaking down difficult concepts to a layman. According to Einstein, Dr. Garfinkel is a true genius. Take his courses! (I took PS 138)

Actual class taken: LS30 (the second part of the 2-part series) If you, for a time, or still believe that you are not competent in mathematics, you clearly have not taken Professor Garfinkel's Mathematics for Life Scientists class. You see, there is no such thing as being "good at math" or "bad at math". It's either you didn't try, or you didn't care enough to try. Why would you do that to yourself, let alone, why would anyone do that to themselves? Mathematics is one of the most beautiful subjects to ever trigger neuronal connections within your plastic brain, and it is one of the few keys to understanding our limitless universe. I too, never understood why people always said that mathematics is crucial for everything- afterall, when am I ever going to use calculus as a businessman, or algebra as a chef? Hey, I'll admit it. I was wrong. Chaos is everywhere, and let this class open your eyes to what you have been blind to for many years. Let this man breathe new life into your unsatisfied brain, because you know what? It's perhaps that you have not yet had a proper math class in the past that prevented you from enjoying this wonderful subject. It's perhaps that you did not have Garfinkel as your mentor, your spiritual guide that made you fail that geometry class. But hey, everyone's got to start somewhere, right? You enter the classroom fearing mathematics for your life, and you leave feeling a need to do something with what you've learned. That is the magic of Professor Garfinkel's teachings. Oh, and the friends that you make in class? They're some of the nicest, most genuine kids that you'll ever encounter at UCLA. Trust me. I've taken enough pre-med requirement classes to understand the true nature of the so-called "pre-med competition". There is no competition in this class. Everyone can get As, everyone can get A+s. It's just a matter of how well you're going to know the subject once you leave the course- and trust me, you're going to want to know every little aspect of it. When you leave Professor Garfinkel's lecture halls at the end of the quarter, you will leave the room knowing that you learned something that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Something, that I guarantee, will profoundly influence the way you see the world, forever shrouded in chaos.

ls30b It is true what people say about Dr. Garfinkel. He is charismatic, enthusiastic, and without need to say, brilliant. His classes are among the most fascinating that I have ever had the privilege of taking, and his teaching style ensures that you understand every word and concept of his lectures. He genuinely cares about student learning, and though he is unavailable for emails due to his immensely busy schedule, he will go out of his way to help you during office hours. He is an amazing individual and I truly respect this man.

do you know how math classes are taught at MIT? There is absolutely no memorizing involved. The professors there help you UNDERSTAND the concepts behind equations, not force you to memorize them. This is Garfinkel. No need to memorize equations (even the EASY quadratic formula), no need to memorize needless facts. Just a need to understand concepts. What do I mean by 'concepts'? WHY does a system behave a certain way, and HOW can you fix it if it goes wrong? These tools are critical to a scientist's success in the future, and I can guarantee you that Professor Garfinkel's class will do just that for you. He himself is undoubtedly, and absolutely brilliant: genius, actually. His brilliance will radiate to the core of your soul and inspire you to no end. Take his class. ls30b.
