I adored Professor Urdank's class! He is such a fine instructor. Although lectures are a bit dry, he still knows his material very well and just try your best to get down the information. He really grows on you and you will like him by the end of the quarter. Try taking good notes as these are what the tests are based off of. Try to do the readings but they are not necessary to know for the exams. The reading was too difficult and too much to keep up with honestly, but I really loved his class. The class is 50% midterm and 50% final. The essay portion is take home thankfully and he grades them justly (no worries!) However, the multiple choice are very difficult so just try your best and know that the essay counts as the majority of your grade for exams which helps greatly. You will learn a lot and Professor Urdank is fabulous to study under. Take him if you would like a just grader, and someone who is very knowledgeable about British history. I highly recommend Professor Urdank!!!! :)
Urdank is a nice professor with good intentions. It's just that I can't stay awake during lectures. He turns off the lights and lectures in a monotone voice. He does seem pretty knowledgeable. Multiple choice questions were hard. Luckily the take home essay saved my grade
It really pains me to hear my fellow UCLA peers who just absolutely rip certain professors to shreds on this website, especially when (I think) most students are not 100% truthful about their own interactions with a professor, and his/her course.
I am currently in Professor Urdank's 136B History of Britain course, and I must say, that I have so far enjoyed the course. He is a great lecturer (or what I would call a "old school history professor) and he knows his "stuff". Professor Urdank puts all of his lecture outlines on the course website, along with midterm reviews, of which our class just took.
Now, let me be honest with you. So far I have attended every lecture, done all of the assigned reading, and have also talked with the professor after class. These three statements disprove the cries of foul by other students, whom say that he is a "boring" lecturer, that he gives too much readings, and that he does not post reviews and such online. This is all false, and again, I am saddened that my fellow peers would resort to such lies just to discredit a professor and a course in which they probably did not put in 100% effort.
I encourage all history majors to take Urdank's courses, because he puts a lot of effort into his lectures, and he knows his stuff. Sure, he may not have the most "vibrant" tone, but he is interesting, and his sense of humor is perfect for a course that studies the history of a country like Great Britain (or England, as it's known in our course).
I want to end this evaluation by asking that students be honest with themselves and the reviews that they post on this website. If you did not attend all of a professors lectures, don't blame your C+ or B- on the professor, blame it on yourself for not showing up, or not doing the assigned readings. You discredit our great school by putting us such false accusations and probably negatively affect and influence others by your lies.
Professor Urdank is a great professor who provides a service to students of history. It is not fair that you discredit him by blaming your mistakes on his course.
