Selling Chemistry 30 BL study guide (used to get an A- in this class in Fall '13). The 15 typed page comprehensive guide includes discussion of key concepts, experimental techniques, summary of expected results and common questions/answers to typical quiz questions for each experiment. All information is easy to follow and organized by experiment name. Note: I did not attend a single lecture and relied solely on this.

I came into this class hearing that it was the biggest lower division weeder class in existence for science majors. Don't get me wrong: the class itself is difficult and requires a lot of work, but it is very doable if you put in the effort.
My advice if you take the class:
1) Know what you are doing before you enter the lab. Most of the labs that you do will take the entire time and due to equipment limitations, if you lag behind you will not finish your experiment. If you don't finish, its on your own head and you will lose points.
2) Stay on top of in-lab and online quizzes. I recommend finding a study group and doing the online quizzes right after lecture. Even though they are only 10 points each, they stack up.
3) Do the workbook with the final exams that he gives you! This is incredibly important because the concepts that he tests you on are almost identical to that of previous years. A big portion of the final involves knowing the experiments inside and out, as well as IR/NMR material so be on top of that.
I did not go to a single office hour, but did all of the above and ended up with an A- in the class. Don't be afraid of the class because of what people have told you. Just be on top of the material and you will be fine.
This is definitely one of the most time-consuming, yet worthwhile and applicable courses I have taken at UCLA. I took my last 30 series Organic Chem course over a year ago, and coupled with my propensity for B's in chem lab courses, I was pretty worried about this class. However, I was really pleasantly surprised. My TA, Gerhard, was very patient and understanding during labs. He was very straightforward and made sure we learned the material. As for Professor Bacher, he certainly lives up to his reputation as a knowledgeable chemist. Believe it or not, he took time to learn many of our names during office hours and was usually helpful. However, he is very strict and will grill you if you do not know your material inside and out. With that being said, he expects you to know all the details from his course readers, and if you do not know it completely during office hours, he will put you on the spot and you will look like an idiot.
Overall, I ended up getting an A, which is ironic since Bacher is like the rite of passage for Biochem Majors and I had been getting B's in 20L and 30AL. Lastly, my advice to future students is to spend ample time with this material and study for the weekly quizzes (online and in lab) because they really do add up. Go to his office hours once a week for questions, because he pretty much tells you the answers to his online quiz during office hours. Most importantly though, make sure you know the reason and logic behind every step in a lab procedure, because this is the only way you will truly understand organic chemistry.
Took 30BL in Spring. Got an "A" in the class but was one of the most difficult courses I've ever taken at UCLA.
Selling the required textbooks + my lab notes & study guides for 30BL. Email ************* if interested.
Dr. Bacher is one of the best professors in the Department. He really cares about his students and the material. All exams are fair and his grading scheme actually works in your favor.
If you attend office hours and think before you ask questions, he will o his best to help you. He is very flexible in meeting you.
Study the exam reader and youll pass the class.
there is no doubt that this professor is very knowledgeable of this course since he has been teaching this course for many years. However, his accent is unbearable. It is very hard to understand him, so I mainly went to my TA for help. To get an A in this class, do the practice exam booklet because it is very similar to the final exam.
