Quarter: Spring 2019
Grade: A
June 1, 2019

The teacher and TA was fine— the actual material covered in the class, though, was not at all useful. Grading rubrics for papers are arbitrary and the midterms cover memorized concepts. She was a good professor though and explained the material clearly.

I am currently enrolled in this class and will update my review later. I just want to mention that those who are trying to sell you a PDF version of the MLA handbook are awful human beings because the MLA handbook is a free resource online now. You also don’t even need the actual handbook. In addition to that, the pdf for the textbook should be found online as well for free or for really cheap.

Quarter: Spring 2018
Grade: B-
Sept. 9, 2018

The lectures were interesting but the exam material was extremely difficult. There were no slides so you really had to pay attention in class and they tested on material that wasn't covered in class, just in the textbook. The TAs are told to give bad grades on every assignment so there is a curve, but the curve doesn't help much. The rubrics are pretty unfair and APA formatting is a big part of your lab grade. Attending lab is 100% necessary but lectures could probably be skipped if you read the whole textbook

Quarter: Summer 2018
Grade: C+
Sept. 7, 2018

I liked Professor Ankowski. Her lectures were really engaging, and she always gave vivid examples to illustrate the abstract concepts. You can sense that she is dedicated to her profession and cares about the students. The test was fine, I only studied 40 minutes before the final and got 34/40.
However, I HATED the lab session. I got a nice TA, but I just do not like how this whole thing works. The experiment part was so emotionally draining and tedious. I felt so desperate because no matter how hard I tried to improve my paper, I still got a big chunk of scores taken off for a variety of reasons. Also, the writing center closed for the first week of session C, during which the final paper was due, so I was all alone struggling.
If you are going to take it, either take it during a normal school quarter, or take it in the summer and DO NOT TAKE ANY OTHER CLASS. There's a LOT of materials, for both the lecture and the lab. I was doing an internship, taking another class while being tortured by this lab session, it was so depressing.

This class gave me such bad anxiety but i ended up doing pretty good.
I recommend taking this class over summer so you dont have any other courses to focus on... the lab portion is time-consuming
but
amber is a great professor, super sweet and willing to help and you should take it with her
honestly I am soooo glad this class is over finally, you dont really know how youre doing until the grades are posted
i got lucky and had a great TA, also thank god for the curve
these were my stats:

final: 39/40
quizzes:8/12
method section: 89%
project proposal: 90%
first submission: 79%
final submission 80%

The class material really isn't that hard. Professor Ankowski is a clear and helpful professor and attending lectures helps clarify concepts. However, your grade in this class depends almost entirely on your TA. I had an A+ on both the exams but my TA, Akila Kadambi brought down my grade a lot. DO. NOT. TAKE. HER. She often contradicted herself and graded people based on who she liked instead of on the quality of their work. She was also very unorganized and we often went over the 2 hour lab time. I had another class right after and used to get delayed because of her. Overall, the class is actually really great and I learned a lot. Be careful of your TA though, they can make or break your grade in this class!

This is the second class I've taken with Ankowski and honestly I loved having her as a professor. She is really engaging and really knowledgeable about the subject.

I was honestly dreading taking this class because I have heard horror stories about it, but honestly it was not that bad. As long as you stay on top of your stuff and go to your TAs office hours you shouldn't have a problem. Keep up with the reading bc Ankowski asks 1-2 questions from the textbook (that were not touched upon in the lecture) on her tests. My biggest piece of advice would be to pay attention in lecture and read the textbook within that same lecture week and pay attention to the areas that correlate with the lecture in the textbook. Although the tests are non-cumalative, the material builds upon each other and so you can't forget what you learned in the first half of the class, otherwise you will really struggle with the second half.

The tests are worth 60% of your grade so make sure you are paying attention in lecture because lectures are not podcasted or recorded. The tests are all application of scenario and have the same format as practice exams so make sure you really give those your best effort.

Lab was the hardest part of this class. The group project is kind of difficult, but completely doable. Write all the submissions at least a week before they are do so you have time to go to your TAs office hours and ask for advice. Each TA is different so I would suggest sticking with what your TA tells you. It is not that the content is difficult, because it is not, it is the grading. APA sucks and I can honestly say that after this class I have become better at writing in APA. As long as you score above the mean you should be fine.

Start early , keep up with the content, and always go to lecture.

Hope this helps :)

Professor Ankowski was cool. I feel like she touched on all the subjects needed for the test. I thought the class would have been more difficult actually, but I was pretty surprised by my grade. I felt like I was doing well, but initially, my scores weren't reflecting that. I'm gonna let you guys know that as long as your within 1 standard deviation above or below the mean, you gucci. I was stressing about this class because of how hard people make it seem, but I honestly felt that it was very doable during the quarter. Just learn those concepts! That's how you do well but only answer within the confines of the question being asked. Be very confident in your answer choices! If there's any way you can do the AAP plf, do it and ace these quizzes and exams. Melissa is an OG, fr. Also, make sure your papers are APA certified, these are easy points to miss. Go to your T.A. and ask for help if you need it or are unsure because those points will be taken away if you don't do it how they want it. Every T.A. is different. I'm gonna post my stats just to give you some courage:
Quizzes: 14/15
Methods: 67/100
Proposal: 60-65/100, it was really below my section's mean btw
First Sub: 65/100
Final sub: 90/100
First Midterm: 31/40
Final Midterm: 36/100
Extra Credit: 1/1
Just know that it all depends on your class lecture's average, which was about a C+ for my class. My section's average was about a D+/C-. The lecture tests are worth 60% whereas the lab is worth 40%. Now good luck!
