Love, love love this class. Why?

If you go to class (extra credit points) + do a project at the end you will get an A+. Seriously, you learn a lot and get to do a project on whatever religious ceremony you want to.

Professor is fair, and such a sweet lady and honestly I wish every class was like this at UCLA.

I took Ethno 40: Music and Religion Winter Quarter 07. This class is awful. I took it because a) I was expecting an ethnomusicology class and b) the time was late, 1-3. Firstly, I would hardly consider this course Music and Religion. This class is merely Petrovic droning off on the different religions, not playing any music in class until about week 4. Petrovic is nice, but her thick accent and monotone voice prevents her from being a good teacher. Secondly, the class is a somewhat easy grade, but she made us write a joke of a long essay, around 10 pages and an oral; also, she deceived us on many occaisions. Petrovic told us we all had about 5-10 minutes for our orals. After she realized she alloted a week of classes for what would be around 4-5 week's worth of classes of orals, she changed it midway through to a maximum of 5 minutes...nevermind the fact that some people made videos before she said this. Furthermore, her and the TAs blatantly lied about a 10 percent boost for attendance. She took attendance almost every lecture, forcing us to go to class even though most of us would sleep or draw pictures. She then told a handful of us that attendance would be a 10% boost; she lied. Attendance was meaningless and did not affect our grades whatsoever! She did not hand back the midterms, which I got a B even though I could've sworn I got every one right. I got an A on the final and on the oral and ended up with an A -. I know this is a lengthy review, but honestly, this class is beyond bad. Don't take it for an easy grade, there are much easier classes with less work (where you don't have a 10 page essay and 5 minute oral in front of the 80 person class). The only good part of the class was one day near the end when she had some people come in and perform the Condomble rituals...plus the music we were tested on was cool, but 90 percent of you will regret taking any class whatsoever with Petrovic. YOU WON'T UNDERSTAND HER and even if you did, you probably wouldn't learn a thing. Also, she never e-mails you back. This close is a bad joke!

I think that Petrovic is possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. Ever. Out of every teacher at pre-school, elementary school, middle school, high school, and college, she is the worst. The class sounds like it could be sort of interesting. Music & Religion. You will realize after one lecture that she makes the class ridiculously boring. I needed to take in gross amounts of caffeine to stay awake in lecture. One of the problems is she doesn't speak English very well, like she has to think about every single word before she says it. This alone is hard to pay attention to for more than a couple minutes, but on top of that she basically just lectures in a monotone with text-based Powerpoint presentations. It's so incredibly dry. The things she says are all really abstract, broad generalizations. We actually listened to very little music in the class, as evidenced by the fact that even the TA wasn't able to identify the listening examples we were supposed to study for our final. The only good thing about the class is that it's really quite easy. Seriously...unless you're a south campus major and you're absolutely desperate for an easy GE, don't take it.
