Given the online and open book exam nature of the class, Psych 127C with Chorpita was a breeze. Chorpita is a very approachable and knowledgeable professor, and he definitely presented the material in a way that was easy for us students to comprehend. There were 5 quizzes throughout the quarter with add up to 20% of your grade, but he drops your lowest score which is a plus. The midterm is 35% of your grade while the final is 40%, and the last 5% are for participation. The quizzes and exams weren't difficult at all, but I will admit that there were some tricky questions. Just be sure to really understand what each question is asking and be careful about the exact wording of multiple choice options. There would definitely be more to memorize similar to most classes if the exams weren't open book, but I would definitely recommend taking Chorpita in-person!
I failed this class because I am struggling with life right now and was unable to put in the right effort in order to succeed. Overall, I enjoyed the content of the class, but often times I felt triggered and could not make it through the lecture, so if you are suffering from mental disorders or past traumas, I would consider the effects of enrolling in 127C. The workload is manageable and he provides opportunities to receive extra credit. Bruce Chorpita seems like a really nice professor, but I found his tangents to be quite unnecessary. Additionally, he made a slide of the "top student performers" at the end of the quarter to congratulate them, which I find to be incredibly unnecessary.
I highly, highly recommend taking this class with Dr. Chorpita. The professor is extremely knowledgeable, but did more than just lecture us: he taught us to apply the information and prepared us to be better students, potential parents, and human beings in the future. He values growth and recognizes what we do. Incredible, compassionate, supportive, and real.
Just wanted to mention that he went 5 minutes over time for lecture, sent us a long email apologizing that he has "tremendous respect for what you're doing and dealing with (academic and otherwise), and I will take some CBT steps to ensure I can prevent this from happening again." and then ended the next lecture 5 minutes earlier to respect our time. I have never had a professor respect or value my time and effort as a student more than Dr. Chorpita did.
There is no homework. There is about 6-7% of extra credit. There are 5 random quizzes during lectures and even if there weren't, I really recommend attending and learning from this class.
Great, engaging lecture.
Easy extra credits.
2 Participation points (1 in class and 1 in discussion section). Only have 1 point from discussion section and didn't affect grade too much.
Quizzes are easy if you pay attention in lecture and note what is important.
Be sure to go to exam review to know what's on the test!
I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend taking this class with Dr. Chorpita.
Honest Review:
- In most other psychology classes at UCLA, and honestly just other classes in UCLA in general, a good portion of the material learned is... something you probably will never use again in the future. Often the material will come across as "Oh, this is interesting! Then two weeks later you're tested on something that either
A) You never learned in class
B) The difficulty level rose to over 9001.
Often this results in lower grades despite your best effort. And you feel like you never learned anything.
With Dr. Chorpita though, you're tested on relevant information related to abnormal psychology. The material is really interesting, depending on the type of person that you are, and what you're interested about. If you don't want to learn about modern mental health issues in children and the history behind it, that's okay! There are other courses you can take in the series, or you can change your major. But if you really want to learn about these issues, you've come to the right place.
I can say so many other things about this course, how it's among some of the best courses, not because of the material (honestly you can learn anything on the internet today), but because of the way the material is taught so efficiently, succinctly, and effectively. I don't want to spoil anything. I'm sure you've seen the grade distribution already, and it shows how well he teaches. There are other reviews on FaceBook, Reddit, etc. that you can look for. You'll thank me later.
