Winter 2023 - Take this class for an amazing GE!! This class was a fantastic introduction to Middle Eastern religions. I came in with little to no experience in the field, and left with a strong understanding of the three major religions in the region. The course was structured very well, with regular, low-maintenance lectures and weekly discussions. These sections were very laid-back and TAs were very receptive to concerns about grades and / or any other coursework. Exams were straightforward and did not require large amounts of studying. We also had an essay, which I feel was graded very fairly, as did many of my peers. Professor Bakhos, in particular, became a long-time mentor to myself and others long after the class ended. She would often meet with students and consistently made sure that we felt the class was being taught fairly and effectively. It is evident that she is a true professional in the field, and cares deeply about the learning process of her students. Overall, I can't recommend this class enough, as it ended up being one of my favorite courses at UCLA. You won't regret it!

I actually took religion/Jewish Studies M10 with her which isn't listed. very easy GE especially if you already have a good understanding of the old testament. Class is basically straight up memorization and should be renamed to the history of the Jewish people. The class was also based on the TA's with them being the graders of the 2 essays, midterm, and final and they even wrote the midterm and final. I had a really good TA who gave us great study guides, told us the format of the tests, held study sessions, and told us exactly what to study. She wanted tests to be harder but thank goodness TA's were the ones in charge and kept tests as simple as possible. She assigned a ton of reading which I did basically none except for the story one of the essays were based on. Listening to lectures but especially discussions are all you really need to do. Take it for an easy GE

Winter 2025 - this class FUCKING CHANGED MY LIFE. I cannot emphasize ENOUGH how incredible this class is and how amazing Prof. Bakhos is. Yes, the readings are a lot, but you're still able to participate in meaningful conversations even if you didn't do all of them. I love this professor so much, she is also great at giving life advice so I def recommend attending her office hours.
