She's totally unorganized. I think she just walks into class and decides what to do on the spot. Teaching is definitely not her strength and following her "lectures" can be difficult sometimes. She also doesn't support her claims well, even though I'm sure scholarship does show support for them. She's just not a good teacher, that's all. At times she's also rather biased, and surprisingly won't accept or expand on arguments made in readings. HOWEVER, if you just write down those points she actually does "lecture" on/emphasize, you can get an A in the class. You don't need to do all the readings; you won't have time anyway. It's an interesting experience being in her class. I hope that the challenge she offers to people helps people grow.

Professor Bakhos is quite possibly one of the best professors at UCLA. Taking Midrash with her not only drastically improved my Aramaic and Rabbinic Hebrew, it motivated me to learn more Rabbinic Texts on my own (pretty amazing, huh? it was that great of a class!). Professor Bakhos excells at creating a positive learning environment as well as making the most of the diverse strengths that each student brings to the class room. I left every seminar glowing with enthusiasm over the beauty and power of Midrash. I cannot recommend a class or a professor more highly.

I took JS10 with her in Fall 2007. She is a personable and fun teacher. Her lectures are more interesting than organized. Nonetheless, they're worth going to as she does have really great insight. It is necessary to do the reading in order to understand the material and the chronology of it, but if you're interested in Judaism the readings are appealing. She doesn't baby you (but does provide helpful study guides for tests), she expects you to do the work for the class and come to lecture ready to hear her give it a more human touch. Overall, she is an endearing professor who I would sincerely recommend.
