Psych 188B, Neuroscience of Social Perception.
Great class! The content was very interesting and eye-opening (especially if you have little experience with psychology classes here at UCLA).
Professor Parkinson is very accommodating to students. She understands that since there are no requisites for this class (apart from Pysch 10), there are a lot of students with different experiences and knowledge in psychology. Given this, she designed lectures that explain the content very well. , Some of the upperclassmen may have found some sections as review and boring, but it was very helpful for a first-quarter sophomore like me.
She uploads the slides online, so I would not worry about copying the content and would focus more on Parkinson's lecture. I find that she often explains the denser and more research-based slides in simpler terms during lecture. She also likes to show videos, as she finds it helps students understand and remember concepts well. They certainly helped me!
Shannon Burns, the only TA, was very helpful. She made and sent out a study guide/review sheet of sorts before each of the three total exams for this class. Exams are all multiple choice!
There is a textbook required for this class, Student's Guide to Neuroscience. I found it as a free pdf online. I would recommend reading the chapters assigned, some of the material was tested on in the final exam. It also helps with the overall comprehension of the class content.
Other assigned readings included research papers, which the professor helpfully strip down and presents in a more digestible fashion during lecture.
Extra credit is, like many of the other psych classes, through participating in experiments with SONA system. Three hours equates to1.5 extra credit points (quoting from the syllabus; "which are added to your final 'out of 100' grade at the end of the quarter").
Overall, a great class. I would definitely take one again with Professor Parkinson!
Very boring lectures and towards the end of the quarter, many people stopped going to class. Although it is boring, the material itself is interesting and exams aren't too bad, but be prepared to take the exam in groups.
This class was so interesting! Not to mention well organized with a very favorable grading scheme. Professor Parkinson uses two stage exams which allow you to get back some points on questions missed. I feel this helped me learn the material more deeply as well. Just a great class! Definitely take!
Carolyn was seriously the best. She is such a clear lecturer and breaks down concepts to make them easy to understand. I took it spring 2020 so this quarter she uploaded lecture videos by concept which was super helpful. participation in discussion is required for your grade, including 3 reflection papers that are due at various dates throughout the quarter. the tests were tricky, you really had to read what it was asking, and some questions required that you had read the textbook and not just rely on the lecture material. in all, this class was really interesting and i recommend!
Great professor, and the material in very interesting. I took classes on Zoom, and she was very good about posting recorded lectures. She was very clear and engaging, and lectures were interesting and included short, relevant videos.
This class was AMAZING. It was not only incredibly interesting but also the easiest class I've ever taken at UCLA. Professor Parkinson was awesome. I HIGHLY recommend taking this class.
The class itself was very eye opening and had some great content. However, if you want to do really well then you unfortunately have to read the book (I know, crazy right!?)
Parkinson herself is a great professor and goes to the ends of the Earth to make sure that she's doing a good job by asking for feedback during the quarter.
The class is composed of 3 exams (90% of final grade) and weekly minute papers (10%) in which you just have to talk about something cool from lecture. The exams are split into two parts: Part 1 is individual and part 2 is a group test where you essentially redo the exam with random people. At first, I thought the second stage was great but I soon realized that it can be unfair in some cases as sometimes your group mates don't study. Exams include material from the book such as definitions and certain concepts not covered in lecture.
If you're willing to put in the work then by all means take the course but if you wanna save the trouble of doing so much work then I advise you to look elsewhere.

This class was so great! 3 exams and short reflection papers every week. She does her exams where 80% is your individual grade, and 20% is a group grade. You take the exam first by yourself, then right after take it again with a small group where you discuss the answers. This way of taking tests is SO HELPFUL!! I highly recommend taking this class
Professor Parkinson was wonderful! She was super engaging and attentive to students even though her class was online. She was super patient and understanding, and she makes the textbook feel worth reading as well. Highly recommend!
I can't imagine why anyone would dislike this class. Professor Parkinson uploads her lectures in a timely manner, and her exams are basically based on her lectures and assigned readings. The only assignments that you get in this class aside from exams are weekly minute papers, in which you write literally a half-page summary in single-space and an 11-pt font of what you learned from the past week's lecture. The minute papers compose 10% of your grade, so the class is very exam-heavy, but her exams are pretty fair. They're not necessarily easy, but if you studied well and did the readings then you should be golden. Just put in your best effort, do the extra credit, and you should be getting at least a solid B, if not an A-. Highly recommend this class!
