Honestly? One of the best statistics professors I've had in my 4 years at UCLA. Dr. Wegemer is super passionate about what he teaches, provides (in my opinion) everything that you need to succeed in the class, and is very patient and approachable. The HWs were of a very reasonable length and focused on application of the exact concepts we learned in lecture. Unlike some stats professors I've had in the econ and stats departments, he does not test you on how fast you can mindlessly and manually do computations by hand. His tests focused on the intuition behind the concepts and were weighted fairly. A cool part of the class was developing our own survey items (based on our personal interests) and analyzing the responses we got from the class. I wasn't a soc major, but I believe the way he teaches is incredibly friendly to those with more of a social science/humanities background. Even if you're not a soc major but are just interested in applied stats + research in business, psychology, public health, etc., I'd highly recommend taking this class!
I cannot stress enough, if you have the chance to take Prof Wegemer please do. He is amazing, his lectures are all recorded and you are allowed to miss about 6 classes and still receive full attendance credit. He is very lenient with exam grades, he doesn't curve but (depending on how people do on the exam) he is willing to weigh them to your benefit. For example, if you did better on the final the final was weighted more. The content itself is intimidating and (not gonna lie) pretty difficult but Prof Wegemer really took time and made it easier to understand. He encourages to use of AI to help with your learning, I recommend using it to make you test exams and to help explain concepts that are still difficult. There are 6 hw assignments, they will take a lot of time and effort, so be prepared to spend hours on them. Exams are largely conceptual, so make sure you understand key concepts of statistics. If you have the chance to take him for an easier class (like 111) you must, but even with this more difficult class, he was still great. You don't find professor this good<3
I'm surprised this class doesn't already have good reviews. If you want to learn how to use R in social science research, TAKE THIS CLASS! Prof Wegemer is the best and this class is definitely manageable. Discussion attendance is mandatory but lectures are fully recorded. Wegemer is so sweet and this class helps give you a strong R background for future research. All exams are multiple choice and because of the disruptions this quarter he changed his grading scheme to boost our grades where possible.
