I took Soc185 online and loved it. Professor Halle's lectures are engaging and the midterm and final are not very difficult. I had Lucrecia Melendez as my TA and shout out to her for always being swift to respond to any emails or online office hour questions. I learned so much from this course.

Class was relatively easy as long as you do the readings and listen to lectures. The study guides are very helpful for the tests so I recommend going through the questions and filling in the answers while doing the readings.

HARD grader - nice but when it comes to my GPA, I'd rather have someone give me a good grade. My advice is take some other class - unless you are ready to put in the equivalent of 2 classes worth of work. TEST are HARD- Reading is HEAVY - it was an overall bad experience for an elective class too! I just could not keep up with all the reading - I mean I did have other classes I needed to take so this is not the class for anyone who either has a full schedule or has any academic challenges of any kind. You never meet the guy - he's a virtual prof, which means if you contest your grade... good luck. I should have received a higher grade, at least a B but my final was a C - my one and only C at UCLA from a Soc class - please! my GPA tanked and I regretted ever taking this.

So I originally signed up for this class thinking like previous reviewers said it would be easy. I COULD NOT BE MORE WRONG. The class was ridiculously hard. There was so much reading that I felt like I couldn't keep up. Its like he wanted to add more to it in order justify it being an online class. I unfortunately didn't drop the class in time, although I wish I would have. It was hard, took too much of my time away from other classes and cost me my GPA. DON"T BELIEVE THE "Its an easy class" comments - It is not, do yourself a favor and get out before its too late or settle for a bad grade at the end of the quarter. I wish someone would have told me this before I was stuck in this class. What a waste of time for a B-.

My first impression of the class was not that great. There was a lot of reading and I totally freaked out. Lectures are boring. We have 2 quizes, 1 in class midterm, and 2 projects. NO Final. He gives you the study guide questions for the quiz and if you study, you will be fine. Both quizes are multuple choice I got a B+ and an A for both quizes. I was totally freaking out about the midterm, I got a B-. But no worries, you have a chance to make up for it by earning extra credit by presenting your 2nd project in front of discussion and lecture. Yes, presenting in front of the class. It wasn't all that bad, except for those people who won't shut up and raise their hands to ask questions. The projects are very time consuming and very annoying because you have to work with the SAS program. The program is available in public affairs and thank god for after hours because you can access the program from home. I got an A on both projects. The class is not that bad, you have to work for your grade and surprisingly I earned an A+. If you want an easy, well this is not a class for you. You have to study and apply yourself.

I don't know what to say. I mean, i agree with both the negative and the positive comments.

Yeah, its true hes boring lol. And you practically don't even have to attend his lectures because he posts the notes online after a few days or weeks. The quiz questions are pretty much in the study guide he gives, although not verbatim. I also wasn't too keen of the project. I must admit, i was rather scared of this class because, based on first impression, it seemed like a lot of work. The course outline has a massive list of books that you need to read over and who the hell wants to do that boring project? I had to spend some fridays going to the lab in order to work on it because that specific program was only found in the public affairs building.

the positive thing is that this class does a good job at discussing the multifarious aspects of American Society. And yes, this class is practically a polisci class, but i like polisci, so i liked the class topics. I'm not as liberal, though; so if you are moderate or lean conservative, expect to have the liberal agenda pushed down your throat. I didnt mind, to be honest, it was rather funny. Overall, loved the class topic, didnt like the work. Take my comment with a grain of salt, and take this class at your own risk.

Professor Halle is a great professor. His lectures are power point and very clear and you actually learn a lot about topics that you want to know about in his class. The class has 2 projects, 2 quizzes, and 1 midterm. They are all very manageable and the projects are interesting to do. I would really recommend any class Professor Halle teaches. He is a very caring and nice professor who encourages his students to come talk to him and the TAs.

This class was very interesting, useful, and applicable to real life. There are two quizzes, a midterm, and two research projects (each worth 20%). The projects are fairly easy, but they are time consuming. I suggest going to your lab every week to work on it. Also, don't print the codebook (it's 60pgs, don't freak out, it's mostly codes and detailed instructions for the research projects); it's absolutely pointless. You only need it for your project and since you need to be at the computer lab to work on it, you can just open it up. The first quiz and the midterm were really easy, I got an A on both. The final quiz had questions that weren't on the study guide so be careful. Overall, I really enjoyed this class.
