Overall, an amazing professor and a great class, though it comes with a lot of work. By far the most work-intensive class I've had--there are group project checkpoints due almost every Tuesday and Thursday (and when there aren't, there are individual projects). The projects require a lot of work (it's an audit type assignment), but you learn a lot from it. I don't think it's quite as bad as many other people make it seem, but you must be willing to put in the time to do the work every week. Exams are extremely fair (nothing we haven't seen in class), and concepts are honestly just an extension of what you saw in Mgmt 1B--the biggest difference is the way it's taught, with projects instead of just lectures.
Painful to say the least. Not sure how I got the grade I did.
Do not take this unless you want to be an accountant.
The group project is easily double the work of a regular course.
Furthermore, there is no TA for help, challenging tests and relatively difficult solo take home "assignments" all in addition to the project.
Individually, the in-class topics and the group projects were very helpful and insightful. I definitely learned a lot in this class. Overall though, I felt like it was poorly designed. You spend so much time trying to figure out the homework and group work that you have no time to absorb and review the class topics, which are very different. Furthermore, there is not much time to go over the homework and group work, so you often end up making the same mistakes on subsequent assignments. The tests are somewhat difficult, even after reading the textbook. The level of specificity is quite high and unless you no-life the class or have a parent who is a CPA, you will probably not do well. The class started out with 120 people and ended with less than 30.
That being said, the teacher is very entertaining and really knows his stuff. Probably one of the best teachers I've had at UCLA. In my opinion, though, the class needs to be tuned down a bit to be able to fit everything in such a short time. The curve speaks for itself.
I would say this class was fair. The materials are basically just 1B review. Yes there is a group huge project (aka the business simulation), but I would say it was really helpful and useful to give you a glimpse of real accounting career (especially auditing). I learned a lot from this class and did put some efforts in it, but I would say it is not as hard as I expected to get a good grade. And of course the professor is humorous and really dedicated all the time.
I really like Ravetch as a person. However if you are prepared to put in 10+ hours a week doing group work, study your ass off, and still feel like an idiot, than this is the class to take. He teaches you some new things which is reflected in the group work and tests however, a lot of things you learn in this class will be from research when you do the group work.
Overall, good course and professor to take if you want to see what a career in accounting involves.
